Meetings are more effective when there's time for fun. Ride a horse under a canopy of ancient oaks or race the wind with a sailboat on Mobile Bay. The same wide, sandy beach that allows you to relax in the sun under blue Alabama skies is also focal point for a variety of exciting water sports. You can day-cruise on the bay from The Grand's private marina or cruise on foot or bicycle through shaded pathways and acres of gardens. Our pool complex is nothing short of breathtaking. Eight tennis courts await. You can visit the quaint shops of nearby Fairhope, lose yourself in The Spa, or find a quiet spot to read a good book. Of course, our 36 holes of on-premise golf is a story unto itself.
Inside, you'll find no less than 23 meeting rooms, including the 9750 sq foot Grand Ballroom and its beachfront patio for parties and receptions. In addition, there's the 5000 sq foot Azalea Ballroom and the 4473 sq foot Magnolia Ballroom, accommodating up to 280 for banquets and 470 for meetings.

My husband and I had wanted to stay at the Grand Hotel for a long time and decided to celebrate our anniversary there this year. I just can't say enough about the wonderful experience we had. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The grounds are immaculate, as was our room. We were upgraded to a room (in the spa building) with a balcony that overlooked the small marina and inlet .The room was spacious and the roomy bath had a separate large tiled shower. Many extras are included in your room rate: croquet, kayaks, bicycles, etc. Tea is served every afternoon in the main building. We had dinner on the night of our anniversary in the pricier of the two restaurants (the name escapes me.) The meal was excellent. My husband ordered fish, and it was fileted and served from the pan to the table. The flaming Bananas Foster at the next table was an interesting experience! It was a very relaxing time at a beautiful resort. I would recommend this resort to anyone who wants a place to kick back, relax and unwind. « less

I'm just back from my third trip this year to the Grand. Two were for work and one for pleasure. My room is always nice, clean and comfortable. This was the first time this year I had time to go to the spa. It is a special place. After receiving my robe I was early enough to spend time in the very large hot tub and steam room. The hot tub room is truly beautiful and should not be missed. I have read a few complaints about the spa staff but my experience was wonderful. From check in to my masseus I was very pleased. If you plan to have a service, get there early and plan to stay after to relax. They even have an inside pool close to the spa. I like to bring a book and relax in that room. Thank you spa employees for a wonderful afternoon!! « less

After numerous recommendations, we decided to stay a few days at the Grand. They call this hotel historical, I call it old and smelly. Though the grounds are beautiful, the rooms are very outdated and need a good cleaning. For the price, I would not recommend this hotel to any one.
The restaurant has good food but is very over priced and the wait staff are rude and very unhelpful.

This has to be the most beautiful resort on Mobile Bay. The grounds feature massive, old oak trees with impressive landscaping. Colorful blooming shrubs and flowers and perfectly kept lawns and gardens have the bay as a backdrop. The buildings are lovely and historic, and the rooms are luxurious and comfortable. The cannon firing ceremony is touching and should not be missed. The complimentary afternoon tea is a very pleasant experience. There are enough activities you should not be idle unless you so choose. « less

I will start by saying that we really enjoy our weekend getaways to Point Clear and Fairhope. We stay at the Grand 2-3 times a year. This year we stayed for a weekend in March and again Mother’s Day weekend. The only staff members that acknowledged us as repeat guests were the bellman. They are great! Especially George!
We are Marriott Gold members – but this hotel does not acknowledge Marriott elite members.
During both of our stays this year, the check in process was poor. We prefer a lagoon view in the spa building. This is not the most popular choice (the bay view is) but it is what we prefer. When we made our reservations we had the agent add a note about our room preference. It appears that the front desk staff do not read the notes associated with reservations. During our March trip, we were told if we wanted the requested room we would need to wait and the front desk agent would call us when the room was ready. He never called. We checked back after 5pm and our room had been ready for hours. During our Mother’s day weekend trip, the front desk agent gave us a room overlooking a parking lot. We spoke with a manager and a lagoon view room magically appeared. Given the layout of the hotel, switching rooms can take 30 minutes to an hour considering the distance to the front desk. The Grand needs to improve the efficiency of the check in process.
We had other staff issues. We ordered room service in the morning. Not only was our order wrong, but we were given one coffee cup instead of two (we specifically requested two). The delivery woman’s solution was for us to use one of the styrofoam cups in the room so she wouldn’t have to go back to the kitchen in the main building.
We typically enjoy the spa early Sunday morning. On Mother’s Day – my mother was told that she would have to share a locker with me. We were not offered robes or slippers. We were the first guests to the spa! There was not anyone else in there but us. We were not day visitors, we were guests of the hotel. I do not understand the spa attendant’s rational for making us feel so unwelcome.
We will probably give The Grand one more try – but the poor customer service may drive us to find another weekend getaway. « less
