An atmospheric propery, some might feel shabby chic or rather dismal. Our room was very good with comfortable bed, well furnished and equipped. Minor issue on arrival with toilet seat which was immediately remedied. Dinner was excellent on each of our three nights, although did feel additional charge for after dinner coffee was a bit much. Also charge of £2.00 for Latte as opposed to filter coffee for breakfast was 'steep'. Conversley supplements to choose off table d'hote menu as opposed to a la carte seemed very reasonable. Hotel parking a real bonus. « less

without a booking, as we like to do. We were briefly scared by the tiny driveway and seeming lack of parking, but after a LONG day of cruisin', schmoozin', Tor-in', and New Agin', all on what we Yanks call the wrong side of the road, we needed a break so took a chance. Glad we did! The Staff was extremely professional and courteous, yet friendly, and the room with its courtyard was lovely. « less

Booked a night here for our wedding anniversary. Room had great view over the cathedral and well equipped. Unfortunately the heating was broken and the room was like an igloo. They came up immediately to investigate, brought us a cup of tea while we waited, then when the problem couldn't be fixed they upgraded us to the Cathedral Suite! This was something else - I'd be happy paying full price for it, let alone the bargain it was for us.
In summary - great location, great hotel and great staff. Well recommended. « less

Just returned from a pleasurable two night stay at this perfectly-located hotel. The standard of service is the best I've encountered for a very long time. The staff are polite, friendly and happy to help, from the night porter to the restaurant staff, reception and housekeeping.
The restaurant offers a good range of well-presented food and a good wine list. Again, the service was excellent.
Although owned by Best Western this hotel has great character and its very own personality. I recommend this hotel very highly for a visit to the lovely city of Wells. « less

Don't let the name fool you (sorry Best Western, but the brand name does not do this hotel justice in my mind). This is a large and intricate maze of an old English hotel, with many twisting passages, a shockingly narrow car park entrance 'tunnel' and the obligatory very crooked floors that, to me, signifies a truly old, character establishment. From the front on the street it is unimpressive, but it just keeps on going behind that.
Located literally across the street from the amazing cathedral in Wells (no direct views, however) you would be hard-pressed for a better location to explore this quaint small city.
The hotel is perhaps not ideal for the mobility impaired, although they may have accommodations I didn't see.
The room was very good for us. The reception staff excellent.
My one critique would be that the pipes in the wall did bang rather loudly once in a while, and they may need to have that looked into for a few reasons; 1) it could wake you up (we didn't have much trouble as it wasn't frequent), and 2) I'm no plumber, but I would expect those pipes to eventually rattle themselves apart in the wall, and *that* will make a right mess if/when it happens.
Swan Hotel, are you reading this? Just being helpful. This is not meant as a big complaint, but you should look into the banging pipe in the wall in room 63 of your Carriage House (seemed to happen after flushing the toilet, but not every time) before it's too late. « less

Thank you for taking the time to write and for your nice comments. Yes we do read every comment and I shall certainly look into the banging pipes. Thank you for bringing it to our attention Regards Terri Chichester General Manager
