Since its "extreme makeover," Holiday Inn Capitol is the envy of the neighborhood. It offers the best location any leisure or business traveler would desire. Hotel features the new full service restaurant Capitol Bistro, Shuttle Deli Express for a quick grab and go meal, 21st Amendment Bar and Grill, and a full service Starbucks. It is within walking distance of 8 government agencies and the national mall, where major events in DC are being held. Whether you are in DC to visit your congressman or enjoy the sights and sounds, Holiday Inn Capitol is the place to stay.

We've just spent nine nights here taking a spring vacation so plenty of time to build a balanced picture of this hotel. We were slightly apprehensive having read the reviews on here but in the end there was no need. Not perfect for sure but I will give you my review based upon how we found it. Firstly, just to clarify my interest - I'm a Platinum member of the IC hotels group and stay a lot at their hotels worlwide so have plenty of benchmarks. I'm pleased to say my loyalty was acknowledged at check in and rewarded with an upgrade to a larger room (sorry, not sure what the room type was called) overlooking the courtyard. The room was large, generally in good condition and most importantly, clean. The hotel attracts a varied clientele of workers and vacationers and if you're thinking about picking this hotel then I can recommend it on location alone. Literally about 2 minutes from the front door of the Air and Space museum, one minute from L'Enfant Plaza metro station and if you've come from Dulles a couple of minutes from the 5a bus stop.
What's less good about the location if you're a light sleeper is the proximity of the rail line into Union station which runs alongside one of the wings of the hotel. We didn't look over the rail line but could still hear it although I have to say it wasn't too bad at all. Thinking about it we were in a city centre and we had zero road traffic so the occasional passing of a train, albeit usually long ones was a price to pay but I guess it's a compromise of location and situation and if you ask for a room away from the railway you'll be fine.
Facilities - Starbucks downstairs was useful although if busy there was a Vie De France and another Starbucks across the road inside the Plaza. The 21st Amendment Bar we liked - lively atmosphere and good service. The bistro cafe we had breakfast in a couple of mornings and is a bit like eating in an underground bunker as there are no windows but the food and service were good. There's a gift shop and tours desk also.
Outside there was a McDonalds, Quiznos and CVS Pharmacy all within a couple of minutes walk but you have to go a little further afield for something more formal.
Staff - consistently good. We had a problem with our door lock which meant we couldn't access our room a few times and this was well handled by the front desk with professionalism - thanks Priscilla!
Was it perfect? No, the decor is very much 'of its age' but this can be addressed. For location alone though I can recommend this hotel. « less

I really enjoyed my stay at the Holiday Inn Capitol. The location is very convenient, right next to the Metro and walking distance to so many attractions. I thought the rooms were spacious and clean and the work space area comfortable. The internet was reliable and fast and even though the hotel lobby was always crowded it didn't feel crowded or noisy in the guest rooms. The service was friendly and efficient. Overall it is a nice hotel, especially for the price which makes it quite the bargain for D.C. in the Capitol area. « less

We just spent a night at the Holiday Inn - Capitol in DC, having gone there on a whim for a quick getaway. We read the reviews here first and knew what to expect, and figured for one night it, the rate was too good to pass up. We experienced no trouble during our stay at all. We were able to park and check in about 2 hours early, our room was a standard size with two doubles and was very clean, though as others have stated, in need of the scheduled renovations planned for this summer. Our room was quiet, had good room darkening curtains, the shower was warm, there were plenty of decent towels and pillows. The A/C was loud but steady and worked great, and when we had some minor trouble with our TV, the employee who was sent to fix it for us was courteous, professional, and efficient in taking care of it right away. Parking fee of $35.40 with tax (pretty standard for DC) covered us from check-in until 5pm the day we checked out.
The location could not be better for visiting the Air and Space museum, or many of the other Smithsonion museums, which are within a few blocks. We walked all the way to the Lincoln Memorial from the hotel, nearly 2 miles, but there are lots of things to see on the way so it can be a very nice walk (in the right shoes). True, there are not many dining options nearby (true of this entire general section of DC in fact) but we did visit the dingy McDonald's for a quick breakfast and though outdated, you can't set your expectations for McDonalds too high anyway, and the service was prompt. We walked to the Cantina Marina as well, about 0.8 of a mile from the hotel, for somewhat decent Mexican food and drinks overlooking the water in a loud bar atmosphere, nice for a warm evening at sunset, though I would look elsewhere if you have kids with you. Next time I might venture further and check out some better dining options further out.
Back at the hotel, the staff were very friendly, helpful, and eager to offer assistance. In truth we were in the hotel for not much more than 12 hours because we were really just using it as a pit stop between museum tours, and it fit the bill better than we could have expected. If I could change one thing it would be the beds... doubles are really small for two and you could tell they were older models (though I have slept on worse) but the bedding itself was quite comfortable. We most certainly will be planning to stay here again. « less

I really appreciate your detailed review of our hotel. I also look forward to having you return. I know you mentioned our renovation, and as part of the renovation, we are changing our double beds to queens. Therefore instead of having rooms with two double beds, we will have rooms with two queens. We are very excited about this change.

After reading the recent reviews I was really reluctant to stay there, so I searched for over an hour to find a 'better' hotel in the same convenient location. I was unable to match the deal that the Holiday Inn offered. So away we went. There were five of us, a couple who would share a room and my two friends and I, who were to share a room with a roll away bed. My trepidation was assuaged when we were greeted by Rose, the most lovely of women, at the front desk. We were given a suite and an adjoining room which was more than we had expected. Everything was clean and lovely. The only complaint that I can come up with is that there was no safe. The buffet breakfast was bountiful and tasty, all of the staff were welcoming, helpful and friendly! I can not say enough except to say that when I visit DC again, I will have no hesitation in staying there...in fact I'm looking forward to it! « less
