I go to San Diego all the time but never downtown -- it simply isn't that interesting. The Gaslamp District is basically a giant shopping small with gas lamps. Assuming you need to go downtown and want an affordable, aesthetically pleasing and comfortable hotel, this is it. $169 (!) is what I paid (conference rate). Rooms were more than adequate though the beds would have been more comfortable if they'd splurged for a mattress to put on top of the box springs. Breakfast was excellent -- lots of fresh juices to choose from. The conference cuisine was a cut above most conference cuisine.
I downgraded from 5 stars due to unbelievably long waits for the front desk, and the aforementioned mattresses. Also, make sure to face Horton's because the other two streets are really noisy, including streetcars. But for $169 you could do a lot worse -- I have. « less

Aside from getting this room on an extremely booked weekend in San Diego through Priceline prepay option. It was a nice hotel. The bed was comfy and a turn down service with chocolates was a nice touch. The single king size room was ver spacious. The only thing I didn't like was the layout of the neighboring rooms. We were divided by a door from the next room where guests were loud and unruly at 1130pm. I was trying to sleep and the noise didn't help. The location was about 3-4 blocks away from the heavy action in gas lamp. Good location. I'd stay again longer than a night and maybe just for two. The staff and help desk need to educate themselves on what bars and restaurants offer when during big fight nights like boxing and UFC. This would help those who want to watch them. « less

Booked this place through hotwire, at $100 a night. For a 4 star hotel, it was a great deal. Then I read some TA reviews and started to grow weary about the hidden fees and the almost impossible task to park near the hotel. The whole place is very “French classic” (some may call it simply OLD) with decorations, furniture, pictures and every detail consistent with a perfectly accomplished French style. The lobby is huge, and the staff was friendly and eager to answer our questions. The hotel charges a mandatory 17 USD a night “resort fee”, covering in room internet, coffee maker, gym access and some other stuff. It is very very annoying to pay this extra fee. Why don´t they add it to the actual hotel room fee??? Nobody would complain if a room of this quality was $120 instead of $100. But you get the feeling your are being nickel and dimed. If you add this fee plus the parking, you end up paying over $160, and that’s a whole different deal. Room: We were handed an actual key (coded) to our room, which was huge, maybe the biggest room I had the pleasure to sleep in, with every amenity imaginable. The bed was great too, and so was the shower. 10 out of 10. The only thing I can complain about was the view and the orientation of the room. It was just on top of C street, above the metro, so is you are a light sleeper you wont be able to stand the constant noise from the metro. Besides, on C street and 3rd Avenue you will find “homeless central”, so the yelling and profanity goes on until very late. (more on this below). Location: It is not so near the gaslamp main street, but close enough to walk without complaining. It is also near the seaport village and Horton square. You have a seven eleven and plenty of restaurants all around. Parking is very hard and expensive. On the corner of C street and 3rd, just beside the Hotel, you will find “homeless center”, complete with a public toilet facility. I advise you to avoid this street at nigh if you don’t want to deal with 40 homeless sleeping and hanging around. 7 out of 10. Hotel Bar: We had dinner the first night we arrived. A big and tasty “Westgate Club”. Food was good and prices more than acceptable for a 4 star hotel. The Bar is open 24hs and that is a plus. Parking: It was a nightmare, but I guess its pretty much the same in Downtown San Diego. The hotel charges around US37 a night!! That is beyond expensive. The thing is that you don’t have many choices, unless you do what I did. Here is how: You won´t be able to park on 2nd Ave. near the hotel. Your best chance is to try over 3rd street, on the back of the hotel. The idea is to park your car through the night, and move your car before 8am. (it is a 30 min meter zone). I you are not using your car during the day, you can just drive 60 meters (past homeless central) and leave it on the parking lot over 3rd ave., for US17 for 12 hours. I was able to do this every night so I saved a lot of money. There are 2 hours parking zones over A street and B street, if you want to have breakfast before you move your car. Please be sure to read the signs carefully as the streets cleaning schedule is different on every street. I felt safe and confident parking on the street. « less

Testimonials: Why use Hotel Planner?
"Thank you so much for an amazing website. I had a very short time frame to manage a bus tour of 45. I needed hotels and banquets in less than 10 days. The destination was West Palm Beach - high season - and effectively sold-out. Within two hours I had responses back from three available hotels within my price range. I was able to sign a contract within 24 hours and manage the rest of the program. I continue to be impressed with your concept and will be a frequent user of your site." L.B. - Grand Rapids, MI
"I want to commend you and your organization on this service. It was fast, easy, and convenient. The service far exceeded anything I expected and the choices of hotels was wonderful." C.L. - Nashville, TN
