Gated car park with wisteria and jasmine vines to welcome you. The general feel of an old castle you wish you had the time, and permission, to explore. An old wing and and and a new wing. The camera obscura up the street is probably worth the 3 euros, especially if you've never experienced one. The real beachfront restaurants and shops are a few miles away by car, and they're a bit touristy, but that's somewhat expectable. The pouada itself was extremely professionally run; the service was excellent, food was incredible, and the staff was very attentive, remembering our names and preferences. The town itself is nothing to rave about, but then it did provide a nice respite from our 2-week-long journey around Portugal. The signage in the town isn't great, so you might want to practice saying "posadou açaafráo?" because it's the color of saffron. « less

There is much going for this hotel - superb location in old town, stylish restored old convent building with well-designed new wing, and very nice swimming pool area. The cloisters are a lovely sunny spot to sit in early season, and you can breakfast and dine in them when the weather is good. The rooms are small and rather dark - the decor which uses a lot of chocolate brown tones doesn't help here. We opted for a suite and the extra space was appreciated. Some refurbishment must be due - the paintwork is tired and the bathroom a little old-fashioned. Breakfast good enough and you can ask for eggs to be cooked for you if you like; the dishes sometimes run out and replacement can be slow. The formal restaurant has a good menu and wine list and the prices to match - there is a choice of other venues within easy reach. It is regrettable that the wifi only works in public areas and it seemed that there were not enough staff on roster at any one time - barman doubled as waiter and concierge upon occasion. « less

I stayed here with a wedding party recently - everything about our 4 day stay was excellent, from the attentive reception staff whose English was excellent - I was carrying my niece on arrival and the receptionist very kindly showed me to my room and took my bag for me, explaining where all of the amenities were and reminding me to use suncream as I had such pale skin. The room was beautiful with good air conditioning, a delightful pool and kid's pool out the back with plenty of sun loungers and nice bar area which served lovely tapas all day. The staff who looked after the wedding were also on duty for breakfast and were so friendly and helpful; and the hot and cold buffet breakfast was excellent - plenty of bread, bacon and scrambled eggs for the Irish! I would love to return again for a nice, romantic stay as this hotel is so architecturally beautiful and is steeped in history. « less

But some interesting courtyards and good public areas. Really excellent and helpful service. Handy hotel secure car parking. Quite close to centre of town on top of hill. 5 minutes downhill to town. Breakfast was excellent. Dinner seemed very expensive for what it was. Rooms were excellent and spacious with all the usual facilities, some rooms with views -ours overlooked empty swimming pool. Very quiet location. Can be difficult to find by car, look for big yellow building on top of hill! Overall a pleasant stay not fantastically memorable but good value for price in a nice location. « less
