We travelled from May 2 - 9, 2013 for our 25th wedding anniversary. I had an aquaintence of mine recommend this resort to me. I checked on line and decided we would book the rooftop terrace with private pool and oceanview, excellence club, top of the line. Upon arriving at the airport we were greated by our Westjet rep and wisked straight to a waiting van. We didn't have to wait because there wasn't anyone else accompanying us to this hotel. We arrived to "welcome home" and a cold, refreshing towel and cold drink. We were lead to the "excellence club" private check in. It is lovely. But we still had to wait a couple of hours for our room. We went for lunch at the Lobster House, food was very good. We went back to the club to check in. I mentioned that we were on our 25th anniversary. They were aware because when I booked the trip I mentioned it. I did book on line. We were supposed to receive a dinner on the beach. We were then asked for our marriage certificate. ???? Had I known, I obviously would have. We were told our travel agent should have informed us. So no dinner, no anything special for our special day. We were very disappointed. We were taken to our room. It is a beautiful and very spacious room. We were in room 7452. I would call it more of a pool view with the ocean behind it however. Not what I expected. My husband asked if we could move into building 8 or 8A. I had read on tripadvisor that it was the best building. We were told most likely not because it would be full, but he would check for us and let us know later. We received a call around 5:30 informing us that we would be on a waiting list. I decided to unpack. Then at 7:30 we received another call telling us they could move us in 1 1/2 hours. We decided to stay put. Did I mention that it had a great view of the Kafecafe bar? There is live music in that area from about 6pm - 7pm. It is LOUD! We were in our room at that time and couldn't figure out where the noise was coming from. I seriously wouldn't have my radio that loud. We went to dinner that night and stayed to watch the show. I believe it was the Michael Jackson show - it is excellent, do make a note to watch it. After the show everyone disperses. We went back to our room as we were tired from travelling. The bar then opens and is open until 1:00, so if you don't want to sleep until after that, this is a good room for you, we however did want to sleep. Then there are the people that hang around the bar after that. I ended up getting to sleep after 2:30. And the bed was hard, so that didn't help. The grounds and rooms are immaculate. The food is very good as well. Service is excellent. Except for room service - if they tell you 1/2 hour, be expected to wait an hour, so order early. Also if you like white wine, be prepared to spend some money for decent wine, the wine in the room is ok but... I asked at our concierge if we could substitute for something else. We didn't drink any of the liquor and only a few Coronas. No, only if we wanted to purchase a bottle. For our anniversary we ordered a bottle of Santa Margherita, Italian wine. It was $50. We ordered it in the afternoon and requested it be sent to our room around 5:00. We got back to our room and no wine. We called room service around 5:30. We were told it was in our room. Obviously it wasn't. They said they would send one right away - which took until 7:00. My husband called back and said to cancel it, but there was a knock at the door and it had arrived. The guy who delivered it was very apologetic. This happened again the night before we left. We took the ferry to Isla Mujeres. We didn't book it through the hotel. We had them get us a cab. The fare was $13 to where you catch the ferry. It was $40 for the ferry, return. We rented a golf cart and toured the island. It is an experience. The downtown area is full of shops, but also with very aggresive salespeople. Just be aware of what you're buying. It is the place to shop however. We did golf twice at Playa Mujeres. It is overpriced but if you like to golf, it's worth it. They do not offer a discount if you stay here either. We also golfed at Mayakoba. It is 1 hour from Excellence. They picked us up and drove us back and it was included in the price as well. All in all, the weather was beautiful, the resort spotless and the food was good. The beach isn't very wide and it is hard to get a spot if you're not out there early. We had an "excellence" area and couldn't get a spot. I do suggest the Lobster House for breakfast as it is a la carte, but the buffet is also very good. Would I go back? I don't think so. We travelled to Sandal's Emerald Bay in Great Exuma in November 2012 and found it much more accomodating. « less

Thank heavens I had read MANY Trip Advisor reviews as they served me well! Thank you fellow reviewers!! One thing I learned was to forego "Information" sessions at the airport. I went straight to the cab area and found my name with Cancun transfers. They were efficient and prompt. Same with pick up for our return. We were welcomed warmly at reception with cool towels and champagne. We were taken to our room which was lovely. A swim up suite abutting the Lazy River Pool. Loved being able to stroll onto our patio down the grass and just hop in! We requested a "quiet" room and were given 6001 which was lovely. I had read about the hard beds, so when we arrived we tested ours and it was like lying on a cardboard box . . . . so I called immediately and asked for a "Pillow top" which they brought promptly. Made all the difference in the world. Comfortable sleeping. One day we didn't have maid OR turn down service so I called the next day and ASKED for someone to come clean while we were out. They obliged readily and even called the next day to make sure I had gotten both maid AND turn down service. We had. They really try in EVERY way to make your visit pleasant and every thank you or request is received with "my pleasure." Lovely service everywhere we went. Food was variable. TERRIBLE Asian food but the Indian was quite wonderful. Never made it to Toscano for dinner or the French restaurant which I regret. Loved breakfasting down by the water and made life easy just slipping on a cover up and heading there and then to the beach. Probably the loveliest time at the beach is around 4 or 5. The crowds have left or are drinking in the bar pool. We didn't do much nighttime activities as we were sleepy from all the sun and fun! But the entertainments looked fun! I would go back in a heartbeat!!! Hope that will come sooner than later!!!! BTW I went with a gal pal (we were the only women there together) and everyone was in couples but we didn't mind. Next I'm taking my husband for sure!!! :) « less

We have just experienced the most fantastic time at the Excellence Playa Mujures, it was our first visit and for sure will be returning guest, our holiday was for 14 nights so we were able to visit all of the restaurants on the resort and had a memorable experience with them all. We visited Toscana 3 times and on our last visit Arturo the Toscana manager greeted us with the chef Hester at our table,he gave us the opportunity of letting him cook us a meal which was not listed on the evening menu it was purely a meal set for us which was fantastic not only in taste but in presentation also, our table was laid with rose petals and a champagne bucket along side it. We visited the Lobster house on 2 occasions on our 2nd visit Julio the restaurant manager had set aside a lovely table which was beautifully decorated the meal was fantastic and our service given by the waiter Limber Che added to our experience. During the day we spent our day by the main pool as we enjoy the company of others, as we relaxed we had no need to move from our sunbeds if we chose not too as Raul and Jesus the waiters were on hand to get anything we wanted from the bar always a fantastic job with a smile. We started the evening by the Martini bar and Cesar the barman was always a laugh and again great service. The main entertainment area was a lively place to be for the evening and being served by waitresses Juliana and Gloria very sweet young ladies. The public relations manager Daniella Parra helped to make each day that more special with the added touches that she arranged for us during our stay, we are grateful for all she did for us this all added to our memorable holiday. We are looking forward to going back to this great resort and would recommend it to anyone who appreciates good food being spoilt and living in beautiful well kept surroundings. We have visited 5 Sandals resorts in the West Indies and can place this resort at Playa Mujures above what we had ever experienced there. Room 3101 the Austin's « less

Stayed at the Excellence for one week in a room by the spa pool which was nice and quiet. The room was massive and really luxurious. Excellent toiletries, nightly turn down, chocolates on the bed, excellent stocked bar replenished daily and snacks including crisps and chocolate. The room also has a walk in closet.
The grounds are beautiful and really well kept. The pools were the best part of the hotel and we especially liked the lazy river pool. The smoothie place by the lazy river is amazing. The bar staff are very attentive.
The staff were very attentive from check-in, to the bars and and the pool guys.
The beach was very nice and they did a really good job clearing up the seaweed which mostly was there because it was very windy and the sea was rough during our stay.
The reason for not giving five stars is the food. We found this to be really hit and miss. We went to the beach grill for lunch most days and one day your food would come out well cooked and hot and the following day it was cold and had been sitting around for while. We did not enjoy the Mexican restaurant at all. The best food was in the Italian for dinner but the Indian was also pretty good.
We had an early flight on our last day and pre ordered breakfast from room service. This came right on time and we were really impressed.
The only other negative we would say was that the hotel seemed to have no problem with people in the swim up rooms blasting their music out and having their own private pool parties. This is not something we had experienced at any other Caribbean / All Inclusive resort and it really surprised us (we did not go during Spring Break / Easter holidays).
The resort daily brochure says that there is a no reservation of sun loungers policy and the staff will clear away your belongings if you try. We did not find this to be the cast at all. But 8am most sun loungers around the pool were taken with simply a towel and on some occasions by lunchtime no one had turned up and their towels were not moved. « less

My new husband and I traveled here for our honeymoon from May 6th through May 11th. I will start by saying we have been planning this vacation for a long time, and had to cancel once because of an unexpected situation, but when we decided to re-book we did it for our honeymoon. I have been scouting this website and anything else I could get my hands on for first had travelers information, perspectives, and experiences. I have to say I was charmed by the comments, reviews and posts. Once we got there the reality was a bit different than what I came to expect. We arrived to the resort by courtesy of Cancun Transfers. They were very prompt and very easy to spot. They got us into a black SUV very quickly and away we went. Enrique was very nice, and took us there without delays. After going through the 3 security gates we finally came to the entrance and it was as it is in the pictures. When we arrived around 1:15pm there were multiple people getting there as well. We were approached by a girl that handed us cold wet towels. We grabbed our luggage from Enrique and moved on to the front desk. Once at the front desk a young man came to take our bags. We checked in with Marcel who was very nice, and had a warm welcoming smile. We were kindly given a quick overview of the hotel, and were invited to enjoy the resort while our room was getting ready, but to come back by 3:00 if the buzzer had not gone off by then. Off we went to enjoy lunch at the lobster house where Gloria greeted us, and escorted us to our table. Alonso and Cesar took care of us there. We had a good lunch, walked around a bit, and then went to hang out at the martini bar waiting for 3 o'clock to come. There was one additional couple at the bar. We waited a while to be acknowledged, but once we were greeted the drinks came in quick, cold, sweet and delish. By the time 3:00 p.m. came about the buzzer had not gone off, so we decided to proceed to the front desk to check on the availability of our room. We were given our room key and informed that Diego would take our bags and guide us to our room. Diego was guiding another couple as well; he was so nice, and took the time to point out key areas, and other things of interest. Once in our room Diego gave us a tour of the room, and gave us info about it such as the times the jets of the plunge pool get turned on and off. While touring the room we noticed that the long mirror had fingerprints all over it; which raised a concern, but in less than 2 minutes there was someone there to clean it. While touring the resort on our first day I realized I had a pain in my back that wasn't going away. We remember hearing our our tour that there was a doctor on site. Since we didn't know where it was located we decided to approach the concierge in the lobby. The guy showed very little concern, and was little to no help. We left and found the doctor's office on our own. The girl was great at getting me care in a timely manner. She even followed up with me the next day. Thank you Dr. Gaby. (only person that showed any kind of care). After the medical issues were sorted out we went on with our vacation as planned only I had to watch my alcohol intake. We went to the beach every morning, and each morning it seemed like we had to get there earlier and earlier to be able to secure a good spot. We paid attention to the message on the daily newsletter so we made arrangements to get up on time and get breakfast earlier and earlier to avoid being victims of the towel game. At the beach we encountered great service by Jesus and Fidel... we loved them both. We also found some of the best food we had while there. Once the afternoons came by we retired to take siestas in our balcony's sunbed. On the way to the room we would stop by revive and get a smoothy from Andy... he was so cool too. We tried most of the restaurants: Spice, Barcelona, Basmati, Chez Isabelle, and Flavor Market. The food was OK, we had one of the 2 entrees be better than the other on each of these places except for FM. We liked every single dish. We only tried Toscana for breakfast. Not my favorite. The entertainment at nigh time was good. The circus shows was actually quite impressive. We enjoyed drinks at Cafe Kafe most nights waiting for the entertainment. Heydi was a delight, and Rosario was very nice setting up our hookah. Overall we had a fantastic trip and will return to EPM; however my expectations will be more realistic. Go ahead and give it a try! « less
