Stayed at the El San Juan in early May 2013 with my wife and two sons (9&6). Let me start by saying that this historic hotel is beautiful. The lobby, the pools, the gardens, were all excellent. The casino was nice, although I don't gamble and isla verde beach was great. The attention to details in the common areas were evident, however the rooms in the Garden Lanai building as well as the building itself needed some TLC. The rooms show their age , but the balcony was really nice and I enjoyed the nightly chorus of coquis and other wildlife in the gardens. In truth I would give the property 3.5 stars based on the state of repair of the rooms and of course food and drinks are expensive like any resort, but MiCasitas restaurant across the street is really good and there is also a chilli's and other restaurants in the area. Also the hotel is in a convenient location within Isla Verde and not far from Condado and Old San Juan. Overall we had a great time and enjoyed our stay, and if you can overlook the rooms age you will be treated to a beautiful city escape. « less

I have stayed in this resort several times in the past 13 years. I doubt we will stay there again until they remodel. This was once a charming, elegant hotel. The rooms were remodeled a few years ago with a modern, white, plastic theme. The lobby still has the deep, rich elegant feel but the rooms seem out of place. There is no carpet in the rooms and the "plastic" floors are impossible to clean. We had to call the cleaning service several times and we ultimately changed rooms. If you want to sleep then get a room on the higher floors because the lobby and parking lots are loud and busy until 2 or 3 in the am. The upside: The location is hard to beat. The lobby and pools are amazing and the beach is perfect. « less

I've been vacationing at this hotel at least once a year for the past 5 yrs. For the 2nd time in a row; this year I'm making a 2nd trip back because I loved it soo much. The vibe of the crowd is amazing, service is excellent & the rooms I prefer: Garden Lanais 1st floor ONLY which are all brand new with tons of space. I usually go with my girlfriends betw the ages of 25-30's we have a great time every trip. This is def a party hotel for San Juan in the summer, more of mixed crowd during spring break and if you want to lounge around the beach you def can. The hotel is pretty much what you make of it. I don't go on vacation nit-picking at small insignificant detail. So if you're OCD don't come here; this place is def for the happy-go-lucky type looking for an enjoyable vacation. « less

My girlfriend and I went for a vacation and decided to stay at this hotel. I read the reviews on trip advisor and they were not so good. I should have listened to the reviews. I know people who stayed at this hotel and liked it. So I went by their review. The hotel hallways were dirty, the carpet was stained, the rooms needed to be redone. There was no balcony. You opened the door out to the balcony and there was a PVC railing. We looked out to a rooftop. The bathroom needed to be redone. The floor in the room felt like the wood was coming up. I am surprised a Hilton Hotel owned a property like this. Whenever we sat at the bars, the bartenders never came over to us and asked if we wanted a drink. We had to call them over. We had a great time because we met so many nice people that were guests at the hotel and at other places that we went to. « less

went on trip with my daughters and their husbands last year based on the 5 star rating on this site! what a huge disappointment, we stayed in the "newly renovated" main structure. the rooms had white leather like furniture that was very dirty, the general state of the room was poor, marked walls, tile grungy in the bathroom, but the worst part was the paper thin walls-you could hear "everything" that was going on in the next room. i did not find the staff friendly at all except the doorman. in a run down section of peurto rico, surrounding businesses sparse. the beach was the only good thing about this place! don't fall for the 5 star rating!!!! « less
