0 friends 1 review Nick S. Ripped Off at Del. Flores Kailua, HI 12/6/2012 Stayed there for almost three weeks, not by choice but because by the time I got there I couldn't find anything else for extended stay in that particular area. ...and I REALLY tried...
The good:
- The staff is friendly, especially the cleaning personnel and the location is great.
The bad:
- The price they'll quote over the phone might or might not be the price you'll end up paying. I was quoted $95 per night but once I arrived it was $96 per night? (Plus taxes, fees, etc.)
No big deal but there's more... when you book your stay they never tell you there's an extra $9/day "parking garage fee". That's right, even though they ask if you'll be coming in by car they never tell you that you'll have to pay extra to park your car?! I made reservations over the phone, not sure if they bring up this fee on their website (if they even have one??) but they don't do it over the phone. In my case it was an extra ~$200 with taxes and fees.
Additionally, if you use your car and return it to the parking garage after 7pm you'll be locked out until 7am. Good luck finding a parking spot for the night. ...and if you do you'll have to pay extra for the parking meter.
- I reserved a specific room (@ $95/night, or so I thought), gave them my CC info, got a confirmation number (had to insist on getting a confirmation number) yet when I arrived my room was taken? Apparently a confirmation number means.... nothing. I saw an earlier post here mentioning a confirmation number issue. Yeah, absolutely correct, the confirmation number means nothing, they give it to you to make you feel better. That's it.
They finally found another room which had a bathroom, very few rooms at this hotel have their own bathroom, most share bathrooms and showers that are located in the hallway. I simply "lucked out" there happened to be another room with it's own restroom available.
- Of course, there's NO A/C and NO heat. During the day it was simply sweltering in there, opening the window (the only one I could open) only made it worst. During the night though it got really cold, typical autumn weather, hot during the day and cold at night. I asked for several extra blankets which helped somewhat with the cold.
- There's A LOT OF NOISE!!!! A construction right next door (hotel that's adjacent to Del Flores) starts promptly at 7am, yes, on Saturdays too! Also, there are several bars and restaurants within 100 yards of Del Flores and you hear drunk people yelling at each other until 3-4am, every night but Wednesday, Friday and Saturdays are the worst.
Additionally, they seem to be working on several rooms at Del Flores too, not sure what's being done as the inside of the hotel is VERY rundown. In fact, I've stayed at Super 8 motels before and I'm not exaggerating when I say Super 8 felt like JW Marriott when compared to Del Flores. ...and I'm absolutely serious! :-(
- The place has a really funky smell, very, very old carpets in there and no matter what they do, it simply stinks.
- They say they have free wi-fi but it only works in the lobby and nearby, if you want it in your room it's not available. Also, if you use AT&T service, their phone coverage is HORRIBLE in that area, at least inside the hotel.
- We lost ELECTRICAL POWER one day, for about 29 hours! That means NO hot water either as apparently the water heater is electric. There were NO backup lights anywhere, no flashlights, no candles, nothing. People kept stumbling upon each other when trying to use the "shared" bathroom, the only lights we all had were our cellphone screens. Until they ran out of juice.
What kind of management doesn't prepare for a blackout? Have at least 1 flashlight, or candles, anything? They said the whole neighborhood lost power BUT the hotel next door and several restaurants I went to seemed to have electricity?
- A few days later, we had NO WATER instead. No hot and no cold water. Again, "it's not our fault", "don't know when it'll be back."
I understand that sometimes things break but this was ridiculous. They never offered any discounts, none at all, I talked to several guests and we all felt being ripped off. I honestly thought they'd try to remedy all the mess-ups by at least giving us a few bucks off on the fees we were all paying,
Nope, no discount.. - despite the fact they were dishonest when I reserved my room at a specific price which mysteriously changed once I arrived, - despite the fact I was never informed of the extra daily parking garage fees, - despite the fact my reserved room was reserved but apparently not for me, they gave it to someone else and they weren't even sure how that happened?
- The electricity problems, water problems, lack of a/c and heat, noise, etc.. You'd think a good manager would at least apologize, or offer a small, symbolic discount.
Nope, the phrases I heard over and over again were "not our fault", "it's the city", "not sure what happened."

The sad thing about Hotel Del Flores is it could be so much better. The structure is quirky but likeable; has a delightful staff, in a wonderful location. It is a direct and easy drive right off the Santa Monica freeway. BUT from the careless upkeep it is as if the owners want to punish guests for looking for an affordable place to stay in the midst of Beverly Hills, and (more important for me) close to the UCLA campus. Unlike many reviewers, I did not smell any mold. My room was clean, carpets included. In room bathroom (definitely pay for the upgrade of private bath and toilet $35.00 per night plus tax), sheets and bed cover were very clean. Parking, in a covered structure around the corner is convenient and affordable: $9.00 per day with in and out privileges.) But, details that could be an inexpensive fix, that are neglected and have been for some years, condemn this to property to poor ratings. Abandoned furniture: sofas, office chairs, end tables linger in the hallways; the dirty upholstered vanity chair provided in the room, and dusty, canted venetian blinds create a depressing Bates motel feeling. « less

The worse hotel ever ! We run out after 1 night, being eaten by bugs and experiencing horrible smell!!!! Colorful nasty spots on the carpet. We saw 4 different rooms. Wow! Junky furniture from the garbage, smell of damp and mold....
They never refund our money! The manager Carlos Lopez is ignoring us for 4 months by now, he is picking up the phone and pretending he is not the manager. The Owner Ann Owen Sterman impossible to reach. They are fraud and criminals, running anti sanitary place and getting away from it. Nobody cares! BBB was trying to contact them ---- right!---- nice try! « less

Honestly, looking at the ad's picture and reading the some reviews - I was prepared for the worst but the location was too tempting for the price. Basically, you can spend your night for the same money as paid at the motel, yes, but you are two streets over from Rodeo Drive. Zip code 20910! On the bright side, the staff was really friendly and helpful. Not all rooms have their own shower - however, we booked and had one with a private bathroom. When we came in, it was extremelly hot and it seemed that the noisy window mounted AC cannot make it any cooler - until we noticed that hot air was coming through some vents in the wall. We just pushed a piece of furniture in front of the vent and the room became quite comfortable. Again, for the money paid to stay in the middle of Hollywood, considering the size of LA, the prices for public, transportation, gas, parking, time wasted if you leave at the other end of town from your planned sites to visit, etc I do not remember seeing or smelling any mold in our room, and the bed spread and sheets were clean. The furniture was very old and mismatched - however, we considered this aspect as part of the place's character. « less
