I had the option of staying at the Holiday Inn by Yorkdale or the Holiday Inn in North York.
The recent reviews at the Yorkdale location seemed worse than the ones at North York + the price at this location is about half so I though why not....
So this is where the flaws of subjective reviews come in...
my theory is that those who went to the Yorkdale location had much higher expectations, and were disappoint, than those who chose the North York location. Yorkdale is amuch nicer area so I am assuming those who reviewed the Yorkdale location were more discerning, expecting a 4 star experience at a 3 star chain.
Anyway, I digressed....
So this place is very close to the rough area of town... but it has the hospital, police station, the 404, and a couple other chains as its neighbours. There isn't really anywhere walking distance to eat - you definitely need a car. You can order in though - Swiss chalet and a greek place with a decent menu were good enough for me.
The service was excellent.... despite its dated appearance -the staff do everything possible to keep things comfortable and clean.
The breakfast isn't bad.... some pastries, a couple hot dishes, yogurt, milk, juice, fruit, bread, auto-pancake maker.... the basics for a continental breakfast.
The beds and pillows are comfy, sheets clean, towels clean and bouncy.... Yes the ceiling was old and stippled but my first impression when I walked in was better than i expected it would be.
My tv was grainy and the toilet made noises all night. I could have complained and am certain the front desk would have changed my room. Frankly, i didn't bother complaining because i worked late every night and was there basically to sleep and have breakfast and use the internet.
Internet speed was good.
Overall - this is a bit better than the 'you get what you pay for' type of place. Yes its a 2.5 star... but with 4 star service and cleanliness. « less

I was at this hotel with a group of 14/15 year old boys and some parents for a basketball tournament. I was initially apprehensive about the location near Jane & Finch, but we felt very safe and there were no issues at all - there is actually a police station next door. It was a very convenient 10 minute drive to the Hoopdome at Downsview Park and some good Caribbean food just to the east of the hotel. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the free breakfast was pretty good, including fruit, juice, cereal, bagels, muffins and pancakes. Overall, good value for money and don't worry about the location. I'd stay here again. « less

The location was convenient for me as I had business in North York nearby. However, it is not near anyplace decent to eat, so that might rule it out for most folks. « less

Stayed here one night for business. Room was being covered by employer, but at check-in it was insisted that I give my credit card for extra charges, despite my employer's credit card being on file. The booking rate was $120, not much of a deal as I had just stayed at Homewood Suites by Hilton the previous weekend for a trip, shared a 2 bedroom suite with 4 people for $220, with an excellent hot breakfast included for all. Hot breakfast at Holiday Inn didn't compare...grainy scrambled eggs, pre-cooked bacon...decent, but no Hilton. If you are going to pay over $100, I would stay somewhere else. « less
