I booked 2 rooms for 17th July 2012 with Hotels.com back in January with a view to staying in Luchon the night before the Tour de France arrives so we could get a good place to watch the arrival. When I tried to call the hotel yesterday the line was dead. I called Hotels.com who assured me everything was okay but there was a doubt in my mind. I went to the Luchon Tourist Information website and the hotel is NOT listed. I rang the Tourist information office and they told me the hotel has closed down. I rang Hotels.com and had to convince them to take me seriously and get in touch with the hotel - they could not and told me they would get back to me. 24 hours later I still await a call from Hotels.com to tell me what is going on and what will happen to my booking - so much for watching the stage of the Tour de France arrive in Luchon. Service by Hotels.com absolutely awful - spend over 2 hours in total on hold today. BEWARE « less

I normally stay in older, inexpensive, 2 star hotels with great character, but for this fabulous 19th century throwback I made an exception. The rooms are nice, not exceptional, but the rest of the hotel is. The lobby, fabulous old-style staircase (with furniture on the landings), stained-glass windows, and huge medieval garden and fountain made me feel like I was back in the 19th century. My room had a spectacular view over the garden of the mountains, and the staff were good - if somewhat eccentric (bookings and check in are not computerized - or very organized - this adds to the charm). My single room was only 63 euros, a bargain. The hotel is about a 10-15 walk from the train station, and about a 3 minute walk to the main street, which is crowded and touristy - the area by the hotel is pretty and quiet. There are many, many inexpensive hotels in Luchon, but this one is worth the splurge. « less
