I am writing this at 3am while a guest here as there there is a massive night club on the 6th floor and the music is thumping through our room on the 1st floor. Now I know why there's not many guests here, it seems like the club is their main business, drunk clubbers through the lobby. 3 nights of no sleep with a 1 year old - argh!!! Location is rubbish too, not many food options. Best to just visit. « less
We stayed here for 3 nights and enjoyed the reception staff very much. The cleanliness and efficiency was also good, as was the breakfast. No surprises. Probably the best reason...

We stayed here for 3 nights and enjoyed the reception staff very much. The cleanliness and efficiency was also good, as was the breakfast. No surprises. Probably the best reason to stay here is it is very good value. The hotel is located on a side street in District 5 in an area that is quite a bit different from District 1 or 3. We liked this place - and would consider it again - because it is only a short walk from the An Dong Market and the An Dong Plaza. We would class it as a "Chinese businessman's hotel" - very good quality, few tourists, in a less traveled area, but large rooms and a great staff who will go out of their way to do anything for you.
We were told by our friends who live in Saigon that the An Dong market is much better than the touristy "Bến Thành Market". Apparently the merchants at Bến Thành Market buy their goods at An Dong, then sell them to tourists at inflated prices. The An Dong Plaza is also pretty neat to visit and shop in. We saw no westerners in either place (market or plaza) so there were lots of curious stares as we walked about. Also, very little English was spoken so any bargaining was done with a calculator.
An Dong Market is only a 10-15 minute walk from Dong Kinh Hotel. One thing my wife and I absolutely loved was the large "Highland Coffee" cafe at the front of An Dong Plaza (again, not the market). Highland Coffee's quality is AMAZING, and priced for the average Vietnamese individual. It seems that having a "Vietnamese coffee" - I LOVED the iced with milk and sugar - is the national pastime! This incredible potion is strong, but not bitter, with an near moka quality to it. As in many parts of SE Asia, their iced or hot coffees are made with sweetened condensed milk.
You can get good meals at this hotel, however finding small, Vietnamese restaurants close by are harder to come by. If you don't mind street food, then there are plenty of places about. Use the "Vinasun Taxis" if you want a guarantee of a quality vehicle with a driver who won't try to run up the meter. « less
