We've always enjoyed a stay at the Jefferson Hotel and this was no exception. The staff is always pleasant and hospitable, the rooms clean, the restaurant delicious. Our only complaint was were a group of 8 and the hotel dining room would not push two tables together so we could sit with everyone for breakfast. This despite the dining room having only two other guests at the time. We didn't quite understand why it was such a big deal, and ended up talking to each other across the tables, which I'm sure the other guests probably didn't appreciate. Regardless, we would definitely go again. « less

I'll start by saying that I travel alot. And I stay in hotels all over the world. So I was excited about staying at The Jefferson. I had seen it and toured the lobby the last time I was in Richmond. My overall experience last weekend was not that great.
First, I had booked the hotel through AMEX's Fine Hotels and Resorts program. I am also a member of the "I Prefer" Preferred guest program. With both, I am supposed to get early noon check (if available) and a room upgrade. I even emailed the I Prefer program ahead of time to request early check-in and a room with 2 beds. The room I had booked was described on the AMEX site as "One King or two Queens". I checked in with a pleasant woman (Whitney), and a room as not available. So we went and had lunch. We came back an hour later and the room was still not available. After 2 hours, and checking back at the front desk multiple times, I finally received a room. But it had one King bed. So we waited another 30 minutes or so. Then at 2:30 PM, we received room 106 with 2 beds. The view out the windows was horrible. IT was a roof and a wall with some A/C equipment on it. We couldn't even see the outside or the sky. There was a connecting door to another room and I could hear the conversations of our the people staying next door.
The room was okay, but very dated. I understand the historical thing and all, but it just felt old and worn to me. The hallways leading to the room had old carpet and were uneven and bumpy. The bedspreads and pillows were very dated looking and the bathroom was average. Shower pressure was not very good. And this room certainly wasn't an upgrade as promised in the package and as part of being an "I Prefer" program member.
We didn't hear from anyone for the rest of our stay. And when we went out the front doors to be picked up by our local friends, no one from the hotel staff said hello or anything. I even commented about the 5 star rating I saw on the way. I've stayed in much better hotels that claim to be 5 star.
Anyway, the lunch was very greasy and average. Our waiter was stressed and unfriendly. There was a restaurant Manager helping him because he couldn't keep up.
Finally, when we came back to check out at 1:30 PM (we had requested late check-out as it was part of the package), the mini-bar key that I left on the desk in our room was missing. I don't know if the maid took it or what. I told the front desk about it, but the man checking out didn't seem to care.
Overall, I enjoyed the public areas which are very elaborate. But the room (at least the one I received) and service are not worth the price. I certainly expected more after reading all the reviews on TripAdvisor. Did I stay at the same hotel. The hotel reminded me alot of the Warwick Melrose hotel in Dallas, Texas. However I have stayed there many times and received a nicer room, better views out the window and better service. And compared to some of the Conrads and Hyatt Regency hotels I have stayed at in other parts of the world, this hotel is not comparable. « less

The Jefferson is legendary, at least to southerners, something of a Waldorf-Astoria of the Confederacy. Its reputation is deserved, the accommodations and service are excellent. The restaurant is also excellent. So if you're into luxury, tradition, servants, pampering -- and you're privileged enough to afford it (or have a client thus privileged), this is the place for you. « less

The Jefferson Hotel is clean and comfortable with friendly staff in an elegant setting. The beautiful lobby boasts a stained glass domed ceiling, marble columns and carved wood paneling. The guest room in which I stayed was small, but adequate, and tastefully decorated and comfortable. One warning is if you need to add a rollaway to your room, be sure to discuss room size with the staff ahead of time. A rollaway would not have fit comfortably in the room I had. Another thing to discuss up front is view, if that's important to you. My room looked out on the back of the stained glass dome, which was not a problem for me, but might be for others. The bathroom featured fluffy, oversized towels and the shower had good water pressure. I encountered two restaurant/bars in the hotel. While I didn't eat at either one, people in my group who did said it was good. The staff at the Jefferson were warm and helpful. The hotel offers shuttle service. My group arranged for the shuttle to take us to dinner and pick us up afterward, which was an excellent service. I would definitely stay here again. « less
