A weekend stay with breakfast for £200 may not sound like much of a bargain, but in Switzerland you can pay a lot more for a lot less. Oerlikon is 20 minutes tram ride to Zurich or five minutes on the train. It has a few stores, shops, market and loads of cafes, bars and restaurants, so it' not a bad place to stay. The hotel's map somehow makes the location more difficult than it actually is - it's basically just 10 minutes straight down the road from the station - just make sure you get out on the right side - look for the huge tower that's a hotel. Our superior room was on the third floor and at the back of the building, so it's quiet which I guess is what made it superior. It's not huge but there was enough room for the two of us, a wardrobe and hooks for coats, a spotless bathroom - shower only - and a little table and chair. The decor is very modern - dark furniture, walls that look like brownish stone and a bright mural. I liked it. Breakfast was included but if I had to pay the extra 18 swisses I wouldn't have bothered. It's got all the usual cereals, breads, cheese and cold meat and you could have freshly fried or scrabbled eggs - my partner had the fried eggs and they could have done with a bit more cooking. There's also an egg boiler, but no bacon or sausages. The hotel has it's own restaurant which we didn't try - we found a real bargain place down the road, Metzgerhalle, which I've reviewed separately - but it looked nice. Unusually there is a very comfortable and pleasant smoking lounge and a non smoking bar. However the bar, lounge and restaurant were closed over the weekend. The receptionist explained that it was all quite new and at the moment they don't have the custom. I hope this changes as it's a nice place to have a night cap after your evening meal. We got a free drink on arrival and two bottles of free water the first night. Nice touches and appreciated. Oh, if you're looking for bathroom freebies, look in the wardrobe - I found them on the last day. All in all a decent hotel and I'd stay there again. « less
