We had to wait close to an hour past the hotel's check-in time to get into our room but were rewarded with a two-bedroom suite. The space was so large (and included a full kitchen) that we could easily have stayed there a week or more. Very clean, modern. All the amenities, and of course right on the edge of Balboa Park. We were in San Diego to visit the zoo, and we picked up the trolley/tram just two blocks away from the hotel. Overall, we were very pleased and would definitely return again. « less

There were many things that I loved about this hotel! The rooms were huge and open and the decor was very cute and modern. It made the stay very convenient to have a almost a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, sink, and dish washer). The free breakfast in the morning was good- had bagels, croissants, english muffins, yogurt, granola, fresh pineapple and cantaloupe, and muffins). I liked having the option to eat on the rooftop or inside. From the rooftop you can see Balboa park, downtown, partial ocean, and surrounding cities. The elevator is very slow, but we lucky to get a room on the 2nd floor, so coming in and out was easy with just a flight of stairs. We only used it to go the top for breakfast, but really it wasn't a big deal. There is a 7-eleven across the street so that was nice to stop and grab drinks. Parking was literally no issue for us. We found free parking one street down from the 7-eleven every day, so it was just a 4 minute walk (saved $15 a day). The location is great, and everything we wanted to do was just a highway or a few streets away. Right across the street from Balboa park, at the top of downtown San Diego, and just a few minutes to the highway. The staff was always friendly to us and wished a good morning or welcome back every day. I would return here definitely. My only complaint, and it did not ruin our stay- is the air conditioner does a buzz noise pretty often. We weren't in our room that much except the morning and to sleep, but I could see how this could get irritating. Besides that, it was a great stay. « less

I had stayed here before at the old Park Manor hotel and liked it then so was blown away by the incredible improvements in the hotel and rooms. Customer service is incredible and special mention must be made about Jeff the guest relations manager. A mistake/ error had been made with my reservation and Jeff went way out of his way to sort things out and accomodate my reservation screw up which I was responsible for. Thx Jeff. Love the rooms and walk in closet. These are not just hotel rooms , they are full apartments. Did not notice any smell that other reviewers mentioned.Did smell fragrance in the hallways and room though. This is an old building and retains that nostalgia along with the modern improvements and conveniences. Will recommend to my company to have all our employees accomodated here in future as its such an awesome hotel and extremely good value for money! Will definitely be back « less

We chose this hotel for a short two-night stay in San Diego due to the affordable price point and close proximity to Balboa Park, as well as several restaurants we were interested in visiting.
PROS: Nicely designed room, with large couch and kitchen area, which was useful as we were traveling with a baby and liked having access to an area for easy washing of several small food containers. Spacious room.
Large bathroom with nice hair dryer and full-length mirrors.
Conveniently located to Balboa Park and the Zoo; nice selection of restaurants within a 10-minute walk.
Friendly concierge who provided us with assistance in finding a nearby restaurant. Friendly check-in staff as well, as other reviewers have noted.
Nice free continental breakfast on the seventh floor. Great blueberry muffins and granola bar; better than what we have experienced elsewhere, and nice rooftop seating. Friendly service from the wait staff on both days. Clean.
We received an early check in at 1:30 p.m., which added to the ease of our travel.
CONS: Room wasn’t as clean as other similarly priced hotels. We found hair on the mouthwash and smudges on the mirrors and light switches. The fabrics on the couches and pillows needed a professional clean as they were stained, so we spread a blanket on the couch before sitting. I agree with previous reviews that the smell was musty as well.
The air conditioner made a terrible loud humming sound periodically and was positioned so it blew down directly on the bed, which made that area uncomfortably cold, while other areas of the room were fine. The humming woke us up several times in the night.
Valet parking ($15 a night) comes with a rude attendant who unfortunately worked the majority of our stay. We were uncomfortable leaving our car on the street in crowded two-hour parking zones, and did not want to walk a great distance with a baby and a stroller, so we opted to park in the hotel lot (you must valet if you park in the lot). Unlike other valet services, the company that the hotel contracts with to manage the lot is very aggressive. We attempted to access our car near the beginning of our stay and were chided by the valet, who instead of politely explaining the strict rules, got angry with us.
Upon our one subsequent attempt to valet park, the valet was extremely confrontational, and instead of greeting us at the curb in the valet area with courtesy and a smile, he aggressively approached us and said in a rude tone: “So I’m confused guys, do you want to valet park or what?” When we responded that yes, we did, and that we would not be accessing our car again for the duration of the stay, he continued to chide us for incorrectly attempting to access our car the day prior, as we tried to explain to him that we had made a simple mistake. Upon checkout, he did not greet us and we overheard the front desk clerk ask him as we left “Is that the couple?” like we had done something wrong or been so stupid to have confused their confusing valet policies. Never have I experienced such terrible customer service at a hotel or had such a rude and aggressive valet with such attitude. It made us very uncomfortable. Instead of recognizing that we were exhausted, traveling with a baby, and could have easily made a mistake as we had never stayed there before, we were treated with complete condescending disregard by the valet.
Also: The valet did not stand at the front curbside area, but instead hung out in the back of the hotel by the parking lot, requiring us when we first arrived to circle the block looking for the front area and then ask where the valet was (the front desk clerk, while friendly, said we had to go find the man in the back with the vest, also inconvenient for a guest juggling a baby and trying to check in). Confusing.
There are also stairs in front of the hotel, so you have to walk around the block to the back if you valet park and have a stroller or wheelchair. Inconvenient. A huge chore for unloading if you have several large items. You have to hustle and dump your stuff onto the sidewalk, then huff it up the stairs or walk it around to the back.
The room is loud. You can hear your neighbors upstairs and through the side walls, walking, taking a shower, etc. The outside noise, if you have a room facing the back lot, is quite loud as well, into the night. Car alarms, people yelling, etc. I think because the building is quite old, the insulation is not as sound as newer hotels.
Didn’t like walking through a smoking area to get into the hotel in the stroller-accessible back entrance.
I also agree with previous reviews that the one slow, old, small elevator is a disaster. We frequently waited for 3-5 minutes to a packed elevator. We would have done the stairs if not traveling with a stroller.
Overall, I would compare this stay to others I have had at freeway-side Holiday Inn Express chain stops in feel and price. Contemporary touches, such as a flat-screen TV and new fixtures, but not as clean or accessible, and without good parking or in-room wireless Internet. Given our experience with the questionable cleanliness of the room and the rude valet, we would stay elsewhere on a return trip to San Diego. We nearly checked out a night early to stay elsewhere. Definitely glad the price was right – another lesson in you get what you pay for. « less

Stayed for one night on a business trip. The hotel was very convenient to the airport and my client. They have done some major work, and it shows...but not quite there yet. The lobby is cute and the staff super friendly and helpful. The elevator is just a disaster - slow, painfully slow. The hallway and my room smelled horrible - like a grandfathers musty closet mixed with mold. Take a cue for major hotel chains and pump in scented air. I had to spary my pillows with perfum to take away the stank. The room was exceptionally large, and you could tell thought had gone into the redocorating. The wide couch, eating area and bathroom were delightful. they could have done without the garrish stencil on the doors - was just not quite right. And it looked like they ran out of budget when the got to the kitchen - cheap cabinetry, falling off doors and bad paint job. Oh...so close to fantastic...but just good right now. « less
