Don't get me wrong... the stay was fine. The rooms were certainly well-appointed, everything clean and the staff nice. But I'm not here to tell you that my regular room that cost $300 was nice... it SHOULD be for $300 in Berkley. And depending on what the options are in Berkley, I would stay here again. But here is what the problems were (I LOVE this part)....
- I go downstairs to check out. Very early as I need to pickup other parties at other hotels and get to my nephew's graduation ceremony. I need to pick up the last of several parties by 8. I ask the girl at the desk if there is any sort of validation she can help me out with on the parking structure cost. (The Parking Structure that they point you to... not some random parking structure that is within a block or two but the one that is right across the street where, I'm guessing, half of their visitors with cars park.) She says "no, and, by the way, the parking structure doesn't even open until 8"!! WHY DIDN'T YOU GUYS SAY SOMETHING? HALF OF YOUR GUESTS ARE GOING TO THE BERKLEY GRADUATION CEREMONIES!! Some of them might even want to get there on time!!
And here's the part that I'm suspicious about... the girl at the desk who gave me the bad news might have been messing with me for the sake of messing with me. After seeing me start to sweat bullets at the thought of how the hell am I going to get everyone picked up in time, she says "ya know, I might have a way to get your car out of there" and, sure enough, she comes up with a RFID access card. Really? You JUST thought of that? You have people gripe about this regularly and you don't have a fool-proof game plan already in place for when someone HAS to get medicine out of their car or whatever? I'm not buying it.
So, after getting the access card, I have to go around the block to the back of the garage, locate the card-reader get to my car and realize that I need to park the car the wrong way, go outside to open the steel gate from the outside, then run in a quickly move my car before the gate shuts. It was like playing Grand Theft Auto or something.
If I was running that front desk I think I would have tried something like, "So sorry. Someone should have been clear with you about the parking issues here. Let me have one of the guys walk you over and we will get your car out without much delay."
Could they have been quite clear on the parking structure accessibility and hours and I was just totally oblivious. Sure. (But I don't think so.) But when presented with a guest who can't get to his car, have a solution and present it quickly.
-Anyway, I think the lobby is kind of a mess, too. I little cramped when there are people checking in and checking out and waiting for friends... which is kind of what should be expected.
SO... aside from starting the one important day I had in Berkley at a brisk-bordering-on-panicky pace, the place was fine. Not quite how I would have laid things out but, overall, nice. « less

I was so pleased with this hotel - it was in a perfect location in the middle of Berkeley, the BART entrance is just across the street and a parking deck is next door too. I got a deluxe king room and it was more spacious and comfortable than I was expecting. The staff was very friendly and informative. The only drawback is that breakfast at the restaurant was slow and expensive. But there are several places nearby to eat. I did not have any problem with noise. I was on the 4th floor and I could hear the typical city noises, but it wasn't bad at all. They do provide ear plugs in the room if you are used to silence. « less

Very good experience staying eight nights in this hotel. Very friendly staff, almost all amenities you'd want, and very convenient location right in front of a BART station. And the staff members went out of their way when I made a weird request - where could I look for a poster of the Coldplay musical group, since my daughter wanted one? « less

We recently stayed at the Shattuck while attending a family wedding in Berkeley. Our room was spacious and lovely. Everyone was friendly and professional. The hotel is very conveniently located to dozens of restaurants, shopping, and wandering around Berkeley. It is literally across the street from the BART station, so going into San Francisco is a breeze. The dining room is beautiful and the breakfast (only meal we ate there) is an excellent value - very good food and quite reasonably priced for a hotel restaurant. « less
