There was a slight problem with my room rate per night. I made the reservation over a year ago but I had to modify my dates when it got closer to the trip. The internet special rate was lower when I made my initial reservation and their website gave me the same rate when I modified the dates online but the confirmation email with the modified dates had a higher rate. Luckily, I had printed out the web page that had the lower rate when I modified the dates. I really appreciated Viet and how promptly she called me back after I emailed her a copy of my printout and that they honored the lower rate. This just shows they believe in customer service. There is no a/c unit but there is a ceiling fan and the windows open up. Everyone at the hotel was very nice. I love hotels like this one that are now trying to conserve water by letting the guest decide if they need new towels or not. I also really like that there were electrical outlets right next to the bed on the desk so I could plug in my smartphone, etc. and have it on the desk because I have stayed at hotels where the outlets were close to the floor and the adapter cord was too short to reach a desk, etc. so I had to put my smartphone on the floor. I only gave it 4 stars 1) I didn't really like the coffee in the lobby. Luckily, there is a Starbucks really close. 2) Since I had to have the windows open because I tend to run hot, I woke up every night because of loud sounds (sounded like garbage trucks). I still would stay here again because how close it is to Chinatown, Union Square, etc. It was a nice and clean room (loved the special touch of the terry cloth snail on the bed) and especially because of their customer service. « less

Great location being situated off the main shopping area and next to China Town. Great location for public transport as it was in walking distance of Powell St and Montgomery St stations. I felt safe walking around the main road areas around the hotel.
The room was good size and had a ceiling fan to keep the air moving. As the room was facing the main street it was too noisy to leave open at night.
Safe in room.
Free coffee and hot chocolate 24/7 in the downstairs reception are was a great touch. The towel animals on the bed were amusing and gave it a personal touch. « less

There are a lot of good things about the Baldwin Hotel, but nothing supersedes the excitement of returning to the room to find a terry cloth mollusk waiting (with special pipe cleaners for antennae). This was a special touch necessary to highlight, as it made our experience memorable. It was more than a room cleaning. It was art.
To get down to logistics, here they are: 1) Excellent location 2) Extremely friendly staff 3) Very clean 4) Generous restocking of bath soaps 5) Very quiet! New windows keep out the outside noise! 6) Very dark! The curtains actually keep out the light. 7) Very effective ceiling fan.
All in all, we love it here. There is free coffee in the lobby, and it is much cheaper than many other options in the area. It is a super winner of a hotel, and we are so glad to recommend it. « less

The staff was simply above and beyond, deserving all the praise in the world. After all, where else do you get animals made out of towels on your bed every evening (we got a snail and two kissing swans)? Further, came early to the hotel (took four more days vacation after the conference I had attended in SF was over, and chose to move from the Grand Hyatt to something a little cheaper and more personal), and got a room immediately (even though it was 11 AM). Thank you!
The hotel is greatly located (right next to the main convention hotels, one block away from the Grand Hyatt, Marriott etc.) and rooms have great prices (especially given this is San Francisco). The room was really nice, especially the amazingly stylish bathroom. Room was surprisingly large, and nicely decorated, with what felt like a contemporary take on early 20th century furniture.
No A/C (there was a huge fan in the ceiling), but this is San Francisco - I don't think you ever need A/C. « less
