Fortunately, there are tons of hotels all around Union Square, of varying price ranges and types. The area has everything from grand, expensive 5 star hotels, to luxury boutiques, to affordable inns. Stiff competition keeps prices relatively reasonable, as long as one remembers that San Francisco is an expensive city to begin with. There are so may options within a 4 block radius of the square that finding the right hotel can be daunting, especially because surprisingly few of them are big brand names. A few of my favorites are the Sir Francis Drake (a gorgeous Kimpton Hotel with low prices), Hotel Nikko (another beautiful 4 star with low prices), and the Marines' Memorial Hotel (famous for their generous breakfast buffet and all-you-can-drink happy hour, which is included in the price of your room).
