Overall the resort is a nice, middle of the road, all-inclusive. Some minor problems (no vent in the bathroom, didn't restock the mini-fridge, no elevator access to the specialty restaurants - a 35 step climb), but worth the price - except for one major headache - see below.
We were in room 2365 - 3rd floor at the far SE corner of the resort. Just south (less than 100 feet away) is the Canibal Bar, an open air disco. Most of the time it was fine, we could hear the music from our balcony, or go inside the shut it out. Except for Sunday night when they played techno rock at full volume, with the speakers directed right at us. It was in excess of 100 decibels inside our room!! The walls literally shook, and my wife and I had to shout at erach other to be heard. And despite numerous complaints from us and many other guests in the south wing, the resort did absolutely nothing. We were initially told it would be over by midnight. Then, when it was still going at 1 am, we were told it would be over by 2 am. Then, at 2:30, we were told 3 am. IT WENT ON UNTIL 4:30 AM!!!!!
Without that problem, things would have been great, and I would have given it 3-4 stars. Staff were terrific, food in the Mexican restaurant was great, activities and shows were a blast. Even the standard buffet had a few items (like the seafood seviche) that were much better than expected. But unless and until that problem with the neighboring bar is resolved, I would not return, nor would I recommend the resort to anyone I like. « less

We have stayed at the Reef Coco Bay three times. Every time we have stayed it was owned by a different company (which is never good). The hotel itself is okay and the staff is friendly. I will not go back again now that it is owned by Reef resorts. They now have people in the lobby offering to send you to one of the other Reef hotels to check it out and get a free breakfast. I told them I don't have time to sit and listen to anything about a time share and he assured me that wouldn't happen and that it's just to get new people in the door. Yeah right! We should have known better! Once we arrived at the other hotel we realized he had lied and that they were trying to get us to buy a time share package. We listened to everything they said and it sounded great....but now that we're home and we've tried to contacted people about our package and benefits we've realized that everything was a lie and that we are out a lot of money. I find it rediculous that they will let these people sit in their front lobby and scam their guest. I obviously should have done more research, but either way they shouldn't let their guests get taken advantage of like that. We will never stay at a Reef resort again! « less

HOTEL: Small but very nice. Everything was clean and organized. Our group of 4 liked that the resort was on the smaller side because within a week we knew where everything was located and it was easy to make friends and be able to find them again throughout the week (unlike some big resorts where you get lost/can't find people). We attended a gala dinner and night show in the lobby theatre on our last night. They performed a magic show and had a very nice formal dinner which was delicious. On certain days throughout the week the workers walked around with animals for the guests to take pictures with (alligator, monkey, parrot). There was always activities going on in or around the pool which was fun too (bingo, volleyball, dances, fire show, ping pong). They also had a sports bar upstairs where they played music and had a pool table to enjoy at night. Our group of 4 that went were all in our mid 20's and found this resort to be very entertaining. The staff throughout the entire resort were all amazing. Some of them (Omar and Carlos) remembered your room number or your names every time you seen them which was very nice. The staff were all very friendly and approachable. The beach was always clean and we liked seeing security guards there just to ensure the beach was safe. We really liked that when you left the resort, the front desk kept track of your room number and the taxi number just in case, this made us feel very safe knowing if something were to go wrong, someone would be looking for us. The front desk also gave us a discount to Isla Mujeres where you ride a boat to an island for the afternoon, you get to snorkel, have lunch on the island, go shopping, etc. It was only $50 US which included food and unlimited drinks. It was an all day thing, but it was definitely worth it.
ROOM: Our room was on the corner with a hallway along the side, yet it was very quite. We were 10 steps away from the pool which was awesome. The room was clean and stocked. I left some jewelry I know longer wanted for our maid and she was amazing to us for the whole week. We had extra pop and beer in our mini fridge and she left fresh flowers everyday for us (our friends stayed in a different room and had the same maid and did not receive these extras). As long as you don't go expecting it to be a 5 star gorgeous room than you won't be disappointed. Have realistic expectations for the room and you won't be let down. The pictures posted on this website are accurate to what it actually looks like.
FOOD: I was very surprised by the wide variety of food. We loved the buffet, the upstairs fancier restaurants weren't AS good as the buffet, but still worth going to. The breakfast foods and lunch foods were almost all the same throughout the week, but the food for dinner was different and each night had a theme. We really enjoyed the snack bar near the pool. There was usually a 10-20 minute wait for your food, but when you receive it, it was all fresh and hot, making it worth the wait. As a younger group, we really enjoyed the unlimited alcoholic drinks. The pool bar workers were willing to make you specific drinks even if it wasn't on the menu.
COMPLAINTS, which really are not bad at all: 1.We booked a room that was suppose to have a king size bed however, we ended up in a room with 2 double beds. We mentioned it to David (bellboy) and he said we could get another room immediately, but we declined because the view from our room was beautiful. 2. We also noticed that all of the other rooms on the main floor of the resort had hammocks on their patios but our room did not. We asked the front desk a few different times and they said one would be delivered, but we never got one. By the 4th day we borrowed our neighbours hammock and used it since the front desk wasn't bringing one. This was annoying because we had asked a few times and each time they said one would be delivered within 15 minutes. 3.Only complaint about our room was that the flusher on the toilet needed to be held much longer than normal (not a real issue more so just annoying) 4. We found the pool bar beverages were very very strong compared to the other bars, sometimes a little too strong to consume.
Overall it is a very beautiful resort. We are planning on returning to Grand Coco Bay again in December! « less

Grand Coco Bay Resort, Plya
The Ocean Front View from our room was BREATHTAKING!!! Naps were SUPER! Valarie & Tailo made the entertainment fun, Ivan, our waiter at one of the shows was FABULOUS. The guy who helped us with our luggage when we got there was sweet too. The photography staff, Anna, Carols and the others rocked and we purchased some GREAT pics! Fifth Ave. was so so shopping...but we ventured to the Port to be treated to pole performers, Myan Dancers and much better shopping. Juan Carlos (on property), and both of our drivers from Lomas did a good job and tried to be helpful. We told the Lomas crew they were the best dressed!
HOWEVER...NEVER AGAIN!
I asked what their best or specialty drink was the second afternoon...got heckled by a waiter about wanting a roofie...thought that was very strange but joked back. However, they made sure I didn't see them mix my drink. Well, I can honestly say that I know the difference when I’ve been drinking a lot and when I’ve been drugged. Out of the 12 hours of in and out...I totally lost about 4 hours and scarred the heck out of my Best Friend, who Praise God...never left my side.
Mouths at the restaurant dropped open when we walked in for breakfast the next morning. The bar tender...after looking at me in shock...dropped his head and wouldn't look up. The manager and another worker were looking at one another in sheer amazement and the manager gave the waiter (who I think was responsible, but could never prove) a thumbs up and began laughing. I was in total disbelief...but Praise God my friend had witnessed this also and was totally shocked.
Our room was not very clean, but we overlooked it because the view was AMAZING!
The front desk...rude and LITTLE OR NO help at any time during our stay.
First night...the shower head was broken and blew water all over the bathroom...YES...up over the shower curtain. It took several calls and from that night to the next afternoon to get our shower fixed. Even though they said they would be there at 7:30 a.m. We waited and waited called a couple of times and by 10:30 told them we were going on to breakfast.
The only ones in our room to our knowledge were maintenance workers and my friends gold earrings came up missing.
The answer we always got was YES! YES! No matter what we asked for. No one had a dang clue...but still said YES! YES! Seriously...when I ask for a wash cloth I was handed a bath towel. I even asked for Dos Agua for our rooms and pointed to the bottled water to only get a YES!!! YES!!! Not one bottle was left in the room. We asked for all drinks to be removed and replaced with Coke Light (Diet Coke) and they left regular Coke. Called the front desk to be told we can only have two...every other day in the room. I had to take the cans to the front desk to get anyone to do anything. ALL INCLUSIVE MY TAIL...we even had to pay extra for the safe.
On Sunday night...the hotel next to us was in full party mode. Front desk told us they’d be done by 11 p.m. and it wouldn’t do any good to call in on them...let’s try 1:20 a.m. We couldn’t sleep with the beds, walls, mirror, etc. shaking in our room. So we tried to make the best of it by sitting on our very loud deck complete with spotlights and light show!
One last stitch effort and I was off to the Spa where I was just going to have some of the Shellac removed from my nails, filed and a express manicure for $15.00 as I confirmed three times on the phone with Rosy. THEY HAD NO IDEA WHAT THEY WERE DOING!!! Trying to use regular nail polish, even trying to pick and pry it off. I had them get some foil from the kitchen and showed them how to soak it off...OVER TWO HOURS LATER I WAS EXHAUSTED. Betty tried, her boss Rosy was being mean to her and arguing with me about my nails. GEEPERS! SPA MY TAIL! Then to top it off they tried to charge me $50.00. When I confronted the manager about it he said not to worry about it and he was sorry. I, however left money for their time and tipped Betty.
We thought our checkout would coincide with our shuttle...not the case. We tried to get into our rooms and our cards didn’t work.
We asked for help from a worker and he just kept saying NO! NO! He must have been trained by someone else other than the YES! YES! people. He even said their was no phone near us...which we promptly remembered passing one just around the corner in the staircase. My friend called the front desk and was told she’d have to come get a key. Keep in mind the lobby is at one end at we were on the beach at the opposite end. We finally got someone to get a maid to let us in and we made a mad dash to meet the shuttle. We arrived five minutes late to be told we had been left! FIVE MINUTES!!!!!!!! We waited 15 or 20 at the airport just in case anyone else was coming???? We were also informed we had to pay a late charge as we should have checked out at Noon! Juan Carlos convinced me to pay it as he said they would NOT let us leave without paying it. My friend asked about a shuttle...we were told we would have to get a taxi. I said no...the shuttle is paid for. Bless Juan Carlos’ heart...he found us a Lomas driver who was in the area and he took us to the airport.
My two trips to Mexico prior to this one were nothing like this experience. I assure you I will NEVER go back! Had I not been with my precious friend who always tries to see the up side to everything and is an AMAZING travel buddy too...I would have cried all the way home. « less

We enjoyed the week at Grand Coco Bay even though there were a few hiccups. After the first day we did not get coffee refill packets in our room. We were told they were $5.00 each time we asked for one, the first day being complimentary. Also, we had to ask for clean wash clothes twice as they were not replaced on a daily basis with the other towels. The food was generous in the buffet area and mostly very good. Service was always above average, so we didn't mind tipping most of our waiters. « less
