'Man cannot produce a single work without the assistance of the slow, assiduous, corrosive worm of thought., - So said Euginio Espejo, possibly Ecuador's first true journalist and medical pioneer. The word 'thought' certainly rings true when one observes Quito, the capital city. Towering monasteries will amaze any onlooker, not to mention the volcanic peaks which surround the city. Built atop the ruins of an ancient Incan settlement, history is plentiful here. Although time has erased much of its legacy, the city is still the least altered historic site in Latin America and is also a World Heritage Site. Despite buckets of history, finding a hotel in Quito is relatively easy.
