One of only a handful of boutique lodges in Zanzibar, Matemwe Lodge is located on a coral rock outcrop above a white sandy beach, sloping gently down towards the Indian Ocean. Seafood, fresh from the ocean, refreshing cocktails, massages and enjoying renowned diving and snorkelling sites like Mnemba Atol, are just some elements of guests daily routines. Matemwe remains one of the most secluded resorts on the island and is perfect for a relaxing and exclusive beach holiday. Matemwe Lodge features twelve, individually decorated, luxurious beach chalets all overlooking the sparkling ocean. Each of the private verandas is furnished with large hammocks and sofas, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the stunning views - watching the local fisherman drift slowly past on a traditional dhow boat.
Matemwe Lodge has two swimming pools, including a multi-level pool surrounded with lounge chairs overlooking the ocean. Freshly mixed cocktails are served at the poolside bar. Matemwe also offer a great range off wellbeing and spa treatments to spoil yourself and for total relaxation. The open-air restaurant overlooks the ocean and has a tranquil lounge area. Seafood is the specialty of the house, with all produce bought daily from the local markets.
Matemwe Lodge consists of 12 beautiful bungalows, built from local materials and surrounded by lush gardens. Each suite has a private veranda with a hammock and couch, overlooking the Indian Ocean. The bathroom is large and has a deep bathtub and walk-in shower. Although mosquitoes are rare in Matemwe, all rooms are equipped with a large mosquito net.
THE KIGOMANI VILLAGE FUND
Len and Katharina Horlin, the two Swedish sisters who built Matemwe Bungalows in 1990, were mindful and
inclusive of the villagers from the start. Money raised by the hotel has significantly contributed to the constriction of village school buildings, a school library, and a village clinic as well as the purchase of a bus for transport to
Stone Town. A government water pipeline to the bungalows was extended to the village using hotel funds. These
are only a few examples of the initiatives of Matemwe that have helped its surrounding community- still today
Matemwe and the trust are very active in their supporting work, ie: completing the primary school building;
providing school materials such as books, chairs, desks and blackboards, funding scholarships for further
education, including university level studies and hotel studies, participating in and partly funding an annual village
clean-up; contributing to the village's sea turtle protection program, paying a guard to protect the crucial
Hawksbill Turtle nesting ground and sponsoring a school lunch program to boost the children's nutrition.
