THE MERCURE WHITE HORSE HOTEL IS A LISTED HISTORICAL BUILDING DATING BACK TO THE 16TH CENTURY. IT HAS AN INCREDIBLE HISTORY, INCLUDING BEING MENTIONED IN CHARLES DICKENS BOOK 'THE PICKWICK PAPERS' DICKENS WAS A VISITOR IN PAST YEARS. IT IS ONE OF THE OLDEST AND FINEST EXAMPLES OF AN ENGLISH COACHING INN. INDEED, ONE CAN STILL IMAGINE THE COACH AND HORSES ENTERING TO THE REAR STABLES THROUGH THE IMPRESSIVE ARCHWAY THAT STILL EXISTS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BUILDING. THE HOTEL IS SUPPOSED TO BE HAUNTED IN PARTS, BY A YOUNG WOMAN WHO KILLED HERSELF, CENTURIES AGO, AFTER BEING JILTED BY HER FIANCEE. THE BAR AND COACHES RESTAURANT ARE HOUSED IN THE HISTORICAL OLD PART AND HAVE A LOVELY 'DICKENSIAN' FEEL AND ATMOSPHERE. A MORE MODERN BLOCK WAS ALSO BUILT IN THE 1960'S AT THE REAR OF THE PROPERTY AND THIS OFFERS A QUIET AREA AWAY FROM THE MAIN BUILDING FOR THOSE THAT PREFER. WE ALSO OFFER 5 X MEETING ROOMS FOR FUNCTIONS OR EVENTS THAT CAN SEAT UP TO 50 X PEOPLE.
