Gunnison is home to Western State Colorado University, so it will come as no surprise that there are plenty of things to learn and see in town.
The city was named after explorer John W. Gunnison, who came through in 1853 on a quest to find the best route for the transcontinental railroad. Aside from the Native Ute tribe, traders and trappers were the earliest residents, followed by miners during the gold and silver mining boom years from the 1850s through the 1870s. The railroad came to town in 1880.
Check out the Gunnison Pioneer Museum for a look back into the period of Gunnison's founding, from the 1870s to present. The exhibits include Gunnison's first post office, dating to 1876, two furnished rural school houses, a log cabin chapel, the Denver & Rio Grande Narrow Gauge Train, and an antique car museum.
You can also do a self-guided Gunnison Historic Walking Tour, or see historic sites by car, following the Gunnison County Heritage Driving Tour. A short drive over to Crested Butte puts you into a historic mining town born of the gold and silver boom of the late 1800s. Must try the little Mexican restaurant on the corner named Anejo Bistro and Bar! Yummy food and margaritas! Prices reasonable for the area.
Great food, kind people and an impressive little university.
I visited Ole Miners Restaurant and the beautiful ladies there (in appearance, personality and service). Gunnison Middle School put on a great wrestling tournament. Thank you Gunnison Middle School for allowing Pagosa Springs wrestlers to bunk in the gym overnight.
The Power Stop had awesome burgers and it was an easy, short walk from the Comfort Inn. We ate there twice in the three days we were in town.
I would recommend the Miners Steak restaurant, excellent filet migon. Gunnison is an easy town to get around in and historical sites and university all add to it's appeal
Quaint hotel and friendly employees.
Pioneer Museum was much better than a one-building museum. Loved the 5B's BBQ and family interaction of the owners of the Double Dragon.
