The early history of Redding notes that the area was settled by the Wintu Tribe. The city was incorporated on October 4, 1887.

Jack's Grill was established in 1938 by pilot Jack Young and is the only remaining bar from that time in Redding's history to still be doing business. Gene's Drive-In, established in 1954, still serves some of the best hamburgers in town.
