Rutland began life in the early 19th century as a small hamlet, dubbed Mill Village. It began booming once marble deposits were discovered in the western district. By the 1840s, small firms began excavating. The marble industry picked up during the 1850s after the arrival of the railroad made accessing the area easier. Rutland was known as one of the world's top marble producers at this time, attracting experienced excavators from Italy.

The arrival of immigrants helped Rutland grow until, in 1886, it was incorporated as Rutland Village. It became an incorporated city in 1892.

Rutland's marble quarries closed during the 1980s and 1990s. While their loss impacted the local economy, the city has strong retail, health, and manufacturing industries. While it's changed much since its inception, Rutland has a healthy appreciation for its past. Its entire downtown area, along with more than 100 residences, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

When should you visit Rutland, VT?

The best time to visit Rutland depends on your reasons for traveling. If skiing at Killington is on your bucket list, winter is the only option. Be prepared to spend more on accommodations, however, as many travelers visit during the coldest season to get their snow fix. Book early, or you may miss out on attractive accommodations entirely.

Summer is also popular, especially with hikers or people taking advantage of time off around Independence Day and Labor Day. Summers are milder than in other parts of the country, with average daily temperatures in the mid- to high 70s Fahrenheit, ideal for sightseeing and hitting the trails. Rutland accommodations are pricey around this period, however, especially during the holidays.

If you're flexible with your travel dates, consider visiting Rutland during the spring or fall. Accommodations are more affordable during these seasons when Rutland arguably looks its best. The blooming spring flowers and changing leaves during fall help elevate this already pretty city.
