"Prices in Honolulu are Greatly Affected by Seasonality"
Author: , a Hotel Planner from , reviewed on 07-Jul-2015
Score of City:
5.0 / 5

Honolulu, situated on the island of Oahu, is both the state capital of Hawaii and the main gateway from the Islands to the rest of world. It is Hawaii's most popular tourist destination, particularly among Western Americans and Japanese travelers who make up the bulk of Hawaii's vacation industry. Prices in Honolulu are greatly affected by seasonality, meaning strategic planning of when you travel to this city will greatly affect the overall cost of your trip. Prices for accommodations, flights and tours in Hawaii will traditionally rise starting in mid December and drop in mid April (with the exception of Japan's “Golden Week” of travel in early May), making winter Hawaii's busiest season. Prices for a Hawaiian vacation also tend to spike in the summer, mostly due to increased rates in airfare. If it is possible for your group, the very best time to travel to Honolulu is in either the spring or fall, when prices are at their lowest and temperatures are at their most temperate and consistent.

When to Visit Honolulu, HI

With temperatures that rarely climb out of the 80s, Honolulu is a popular city to visit all year. However, with temperatures averaging between the 60s and 80s, low humidity, excellent surfing conditions, and whale-watching season in full swing, the months between December and April are some of the most popular times to visit. Of course, this also means it's the most expensive time to stay in Honolulu. If you're planning your trip between the months of May and August, it's possible to find some good deals on hotel rooms, especially if you arrive in early May before school lets out and families start traveling. These are the warmest months in Honolulu, with temperatures sometimes reaching above 90 degrees. However, pack some layers if you plan to hike to higher elevations because it can still be cool. The months between September and November are some of the best to visit Honolulu. Not only do temperatures usually range between the low 70s and mid-80s, crowds are lighter, so hotels charge less for rooms. However, there is a greater chance of rain during these months, so make sure you pack a raincoat.

"Friendly Locals"
Score 5.0 / 5

City of Honolulu was very quaint and people on street were friendly as these people not being part of a resort, they do not have to be friendly. Real test is how the locals away from the resort come in contact with you.

I lived there for seven years because my husband was in the military. I love everything about Honolulu, the weather, the people, the food, the beaches and all that Honolulu has to offer. My group of 34 didn't want to board the plane to come home.

"Drive Defensively!"
Score 4.0 / 5

Variety of food choices in Honolulu is very good. Traffic is horrific. Drivers are frightening. Use of signal lights and adherence to speed limits are clearly only general guidelines as neither are used / followed with regularity. Yield signs are meaningless.

Paul M., from 26-Apr-2014
"Lots to do with wonderful locals."
Score 4.0 / 5

We loved all of the sites we visited such as Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Pali Lookout, Matsumoto's Shave Ice, Ala Moana Center (my choir performed on Centerstage which was very fun). We all loved the beautiful weather, especially the tropical breeze. My group had no ground transportation so we made great use of the public buses which worked well (only $1.50 for youth). We also had the opportunity to perform in the Kawaiahao Church in a music festival which was fantastic. On our final night we attended a luau at Paradise Cove which was great. Overall, we really appreciated how friendly the people of Hawaii are, very sincere, kind, and loving.
