Although the city has an area of 412km, the historic center has been converted into a 3km pedestrian zone.I took a walking tour of the city that lasted four hours and after another two hours in the Acropolis Museum, I had seen it all. The Agora Market was my favorite part of the city, just a few blocks north of the Acropolis and full of affordable souvenirs for everyone.

The hotel you choose for your trip can set the mood for your entire adventure. Here are some recommendations to point you toward the city's best accommodation options.

Best Time to Visit Athens, Greece

No matter when you go to Greece, you won't have to pack your parka. The country's Mediterranean location means that the weather is on the warm side from January 1 to December 31. However, Athens does get quite hot during the summer; the average high temperature in July and August hovers around 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Another reason to avoid Athens during the summer is that this is the most popular time to visit the city, which means there will be thicker crowds and higher hotel rates. If you must visit Athens in the summer, plan your trip well ahead of time.

Spring and fall are the best times to see Athens. The weather is pleasant but not smoldering. There will be fewer people in the city as well, so you'll have some breathing room as you go from attraction to attraction. Another advantage of visiting in a shoulder season is that you're more likely to score a fantastic rate on a fantastic hotel.

It tends to rain in Athens during the winter. Although the weather isn't exactly cold, the dampness can hinder your full enjoyment of the city. Still, if you can risk getting a little soggy, you'll enjoy the year's cheapest hotel rates.

The Divani Apollan Palace and Thalasso is a top pick for luxury-lovers in Athens. This gem, which sits right by the sea, offers gorgeous suites that let you drink in a picturesque view of the beach. Spend your days enjoying the charms of Kavouri Beach or Astir Beach, or head to Vouliagmeni Spa Lake or onAqua Sports Park. If you want to explore the Athens city center, you'll have to travel about 10 miles — but the commute is worth it when you can come back to crash at this spectacular hotel. Enjoy free buffet breakfast and free internet access. In your room, you'll find a minibar, a private balcony, and a bathroom with a deep soaking tub and designer toiletries.

King George, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Athens, is a top choice for travelers who want to both be spoiled and be near all the action. The hotel is within walking distance of the city center, making it easy for you to strike out and explore Syntagma Square, the Athens National Garden, and more. When you're back at the hotel in your room, you can enjoy posh amenities such as an LED TV, an iPod docking station, and a rainfall showerhead. Are you traveling for business instead of pleasure? Both the King George and the Divani Apollan feature conference rooms and meeting spaces. You'll be able to impress your clients and be productive while you enjoy your Athens getaway.

Also put Divani Caravel on your list of luxury hotel options to check out in Athens. This hotel is about a mile from the city center, offering an ideal location. Budget-Friendly Hotel Options in Athens, Greece

3 Star Average Prices: $54.17

If you're the super active type who plans on spending most of your time in Athens away from your hotel, you probably won't mind staying at a place that offers only the basics.

Athens Choice is a friendly and clean hostel in the Omonia Square area. It puts you close to top attractions like the National Archaeological Museum, Athens City Hall, and the National Library of Greece. The hostel itself is one of the most affordable places in the city, but it offers all the basics plus free internet access. The rooms are dorm style; if you are concerned about keeping your stuff safe, take advantage of a safe deposit box at the front desk. There is even a bar/lounge on the property, giving you an ideal place to kick back and relax after a long day of exploring.

Hotel Sun is another budget-friendly choice. Book a single room or get convenient connecting family rooms. The hotel is right next to the sea, giving you easy access to the beach. It is away from Athens' most popular attractions, though, so you'll have to carefully plan your transportation in order to fully experience the city. A restaurant and bar at the hotel offer an easy way to unwind. The rooms have refrigerators and TVs. They even have air conditioning so you can beat the humid weather if you're not used to those conditions.

Claridge Hotel is a two-star property less than half a mile from the Athens city center. Like Athens Choice, its location is its primary appeal. It puts you close to Kotzia Square, the University of Athens, and so much more. Single rooms are available, so you'll have your privacy. Free Wi-Fi will keep you connected day and night.

Where are the real discounts in Athens

Domotel Kastri is a four-star hotel about ten miles outside the city center. Depending on when you visit Athens, you may be able to get a room for well under $200 per night. In your room, you'll find an LCD TV with satellite programming and a bathroom with designed toiletries.

Live in Athens, Short Stay Apartments is a small four-star property that has seven rooms. The rooms include stovetops and refrigerators to help you save money on food. It is near the city center, providing easy access to the best of what Athens has to offer. Some rooms feature a balcony that is the perfect place to step out and get some fresh air.

Athens Atrium Hotel and Suites is another option that is reasonably close to the city center. For less than $200 per night, you can indulge in a hotel that has a quiet setting, friendly staff, and well-kept rooms. A roundtrip airport shuttle is available.

Foods You Have to Try While You’re in Athens, Greece

Food is one of the highlights of any vacation, right? While you're experiencing the beauty of Athens, satisfy your appetite by trying some classic Greek fare. Gyros, for instance, include meat that is roasted vertically on a rotating spit. Add pita bread, tzatziki sauce, some veggies, and fries, and you have a delicious handheld meal. Sure, it is a little on the messy side, but this food is a must-try when you're in Greece.

Saganaki is another favorite. Since it is basically deep-fried cheese, it certainly isn't the healthiest thing on a Greek menu, but it is more than worth a taste. You should also try Moussaka, which is similar to lasagna but has no pasta in it. It includes eggplant, meat, and veggies — yum!

You've probably had Greek salad at a restaurant near home, but you can expect that the natives will make it better than anyone outside of Greece. Enjoy crisp greens, cucumbers, tomatoes, olives, feta cheese, and delicious dressing. Eat it as a side dish or as a meal in itself. Add grilled meat for extra protein.

Athens, Greece, is eager to welcome you. As you explore ancient sites, modern marvels, and delectable food, you want to stay someplace that fits your budget and your tastes. Whether you decide to save money on your hotel so you can have more fun in the city or you want to dive into luxury, there is an Athens hotel that is waiting for you to check in.

Athens, Greece in a nutshell

The Greece's largest city is deemed as one of the world's oldest. The nickname "The Glorious City" is apt as it has been a major hub of philosophy, arts and learning. It is the home of Plato's Academy but you don't have to be his student or a genius to grasp what wonders this town has. As long as you have your passport, you are good to go and explore. The monuments in Athens like the Parthenon and Ottoman still speak of the classical era. The town also holds a couple of UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Daphni Monastery and Acropolis of Athens. Heritage buffs and structural design enthusiasts will drop their jaw upon seeing the architectural wonders of the city like Athens City Hall, Old and New Parliaments, Athens Academy and Zappeion Hall. The edifices range from Greco-Roman and Neo-Classical, Roman and modern. Athens also has wide breathing space for you to enjoy nature. The greeneries like the National Garden of Athens and the mini-forest in Philopappos, Ardettos and Pnyx hills that are filled with pine trees and others is a magnificent escape from the bustling city life. Athens is indeed a wonderful city to visit, and it is no myth at all.
