Located on the banks of the Thu Bon River, the ancient town of Hoi An was historically one of Southeast Asia's most important trade ports. Heavy silting of the river's mouth during the. 18th century slowly prevented large merchant ships from entering the bustling port, leaving the town relatively untouched for over 200 years. Rediscovered in the late 20th century, UNESCO declared Hoi An a World Heritage Site in 1999, restoring its international prominence. Situated 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of Da Nang City, Hoi An proudly stands today as Vietnam's best-preserved cultural site. Low, tiled-roof traditional houses convey Hoi An's Chinese and Japanese heritage with picturesque mango-colored streets and alleys interconnecting the downtown area. The colors, quaint riverside community and old-world atmosphere help make Hoi An one of the world's most unique and memorable destinations to visit.
