'For although it is certainly true that quantitative measurements are of great importance, it is a grave error to suppose that the whole of experimental physics can be brought under this heading. We can start measuring only when we know what to measure: qualitative observation has to precede quantitative measurement, and by making experimental arrangements for quantitative measurements we may even eliminate the possibility of new phenomena appearing, - these are the philosophical words of a famous Dutch physicist renowned for his research on the two-fluid model of superconductors and the Casimir effect, Hendrik Casimir. The reason we mention him is because the scientist was born and raised in Leiden. A physically and energetically beautiful “old world” city - cobbled streets, containers of colorful potted flowers (annuals such as petunias and geraniums) hanging from the old fashioned lamp posts and many side rails of the picturesque canals. Leiden appears well maintained with little trash and litter on the streets.
