The Albany center is approximately the area of Downtown Albany and the area of Thronateeska Heritage Museum.

Albany is a city in southwest Georgia that sits on the Flint River. In its early days, Albany became more prominent as a market and shipping center, serving as a meeting point for seven railroad lines and a number of riverboats. During World War II, the city received military investment that also aided in developing the area. Nelson Tift settled in the area after coming from Groton, Connecticut, and named the city after New York state's capital. The General Assembly of Georgia incorporated Albany as a city in 1838. This area does include a number of historical structures, memorials, and attractions, including one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia.

When should you visit Albany, Georgia?

Albany's climate is mild in the winter, so many East Coast residents enjoy visiting the area when it gets colder in the northern part of the United States. The summers are hot and humid, with average highs in the 90s between June and early September. Albany also receives about 53 inches of precipitation annually, which is higher than the national average. This comes in the form of rainfall, as it very rarely snows. If you plan to spend time at the outdoor attractions, the fall and spring seasons are best based on the climate.

One of the city's main events is an annual road race, which includes full and half-marathon distances. The marathon is one of the top qualifying events in the nation for the Boston Marathon, so many runners who aspire to participate in that prestigious race will come to Albany in early March to participate. The race also coincides with the annual Mardi Gras Street Festival, which takes place in downtown Albany. Hotel rates tend to be higher than average at this time of the year.
