The Hattiesburg center point is about the area of Downtown Hattiesburg and the area of Hattiesburg Area Historical.

Before the American Civil War, the only properties located at the confluence of the Leaf and Bouie rivers, where current-day Hattiesburg sits, were plantations. After the war, European Americans developed the area, but it was William H. Hardy, a civil engineer, who founded the city in 1882 and named it after his wife, Hattie. Two years later, the city was incorporated and had 400 residents. Its nickname became “The Hub City” because it later expanded as a center of the railroad and lumber industries.
