Havelock is deeply rooted in military history. The community was originally called “Havelock Station” after Sir Henry Havelock, a British officer who established his reputation during the 1857 Indian Mutiny. Havelock also served as a landing point during the Civil War's Battle of New Bern in 1862. During the 19th century, the local economy relied on the production of naval supplies, including tar and turpentine, before the invention of the steam engine.
In 1940, Havelock became the site of Cherry Point, the largest Marine Corps Air Station in the world. The town of Havelock was officially established in 1959. Today, many residents work at Cherry Point's Fleet Readiness Center East. With the town's location next to the Neuse River, Neuse Forest, and Croatan National Forest, Havelock also makes a great vacation destination. Whatever your reason for visiting Havelock, you want to find the right accommodations that allow you to explore everything this vibrant community has to offer.
When should you visit Havelock, NC?
The best time to visit Havelock is during the spring and fall shoulder seasons, specifically from March through May and again from September through November. Hotel rates drop and visitor crowds dissipate, which makes sightseeing easier around the Outer Banks. Keep in mind, however, that North Carolina's hurricane season lasts until the end of November. You may want to plan a spring trip to avoid any chances of facing inclement weather.
When planning your trip to Havelock, keep Cherry Point's event schedule in mind. For example, the Marine Corps Air Station holds commencement ceremonies for university graduates at the end of each spring term. These ceremonies attract many visitors to the area. Unless you're specifically attending an event here, you may want to schedule your trip around these key dates to avoid increases in area hotel rates.
Finding an affordable hotel on the coast can be a challenge during the summer months. Rooms fill up quickly from June through August, and rates increase, as well. If you manage to score a room during this time, be sure to stay hydrated to help combat the heat and humidity.
Winter is a great time to visit Havelock if you're hoping to get some peace and quiet. Many outdoor attractions along the Outer Banks are open throughout the year, and hotels are more affordable at this time. Smaller mom-and-pop restaurants and shops tend to close for the season, but plenty of larger businesses stay open regardless of the season.
