In 1834, Clark Dibble stumbled upon an idyllic scene at the confluence of several Native American trails near the Shiawassee River. He was immediately taken with the favorable location. It was easily accessible by both trail and river, so it wasn't long before settlers came to join Dibble at his new homestead named Dibbleville.

Years later, a land speculator named William M. Fenton won a lucky hand at a card game, and the prize was the name of the town. In fact, several streets in town are also linked to the same fateful card game, with one street name reportedly rechristened in honor of Fenton's wife, Adelaide. Notably, Fenton went on to become lieutenant governor of Michigan.

As quaint as its origin story, Fenton still maintains its small-town Michigan charm with a historic downtown, a riverside park complete with a gazebo, and a close-knit community of family and friends oriented around a town square.

When to Visit Fenton, MI

Fenton, MI, experiences four distinct seasons and all the weather conditions that come with them. Michigan has a reputation for snowy, cold winters, and Fenton is no exception to this rule. There's no wonder that some of the favorite activities in Fenton include ice fishing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and downhill skiing. The area around Fenton is full of woodland, parks, lakes, and rivers to explore in the warmer months and in the spring. Autumn also brings a riot of fall colors with the changing of the leaves.

If you're visiting Fenton to spend some time on Fenton Lake (the dammed portion of the Shiawassee River), you'll want to wait until at least May to brave the waters on Fenton Lake for a swim on its public beach. Springtime is lovely for boating, a picnic, or a stroll down the paths at Lake Park. The Old Towne Fenton Farmer's Market also takes place regularly from June through September, so it's a good time to come and meet the local community while shopping for local wares and organic produce.

The Fenton Artwalk takes place in mid-July, showcasing juried artists from around the country. If you plan to visit around this time, be sure to book your hotel well in advance. You should also book early if you plan to ride (or cheer on) the cyclists of the Fenton Tour de Lacs, which takes place in August. It's a fun event you won't want to miss. Each year, riders of all ages and abilities take part in a bike tour of the scenic lakes and rolling hillsides surrounding Fenton. With over 50 lakes in a 10-mile radius, the region's landscape is simply beautiful.

Fenton, MI: Friendly for the Whole Family

You can't visit Michigan without a visit to a local cider mill. The region produces abundant (and delicious) apples, and at a cider mill, you can taste the fruits of their labors. Local favorite Spicer Orchards Farm Market is both a cider mill and a winery. This kid-friendly property is dog-friendly, too, so you literally can take the whole family for a day of fun throughout the seasons. Parents can enjoy free wine tastings and live music. There's pumpkin picking and hay riding in the fall, and kids will love the tractor rides and games in the summertime. Cider mills offer plenty of tasty treats and dining too, including barbecue, corn, and a regional favorite: apple cider donuts.

Perhaps the greatest attraction of Fenton is its people. Check the local parks and recreation site before you go to find something to do and to live like a local. For example, you could drop by the city's weekly art meet-up, where people get together to simply create. Bring your kids to the mother-son dance or go eat brunch at the local firehouse-turned-restaurant. You're sure to make a few friends and create some unforgettable memories in Fenton.
