The Fletcher area was originally settled in 1795 when Samuel Murray relocated his family from nearby western North Carolina. The journey through the mountains was difficult, and the only pathway was an old Indian trail. He finally settled just east of Howard Gap Road and nearby where Fletcher Community Park is located today. After settling in the area, he began to acquire as much property as he could in the Limestone District in Buncombe County. He eventually purchased over 10,000 acres spanning from Cane Creek to French Broad River. After the first post office was opened in the area, the town first became known as Murrayville.

The area was known as a strategic location as it was one of only a few way-stations along the Buncombe Turnpike, which had been completed in the 1800s. The turnpike served as the main travel route for farmers, traders, and settlers moving between South Carolina, Asheville, and other northern points in the state. The area saw its first name change in 1837 to Shufordsville once the new postmaster Jacob Rhyne Shuford took over. It was not long after that North Carolina redesigned its county lines, and Shufordsville moved from Buncombe County to become part of the newly formed Henderson County.

The city continued to grow and finally settled on its final name, Fletcher. The current name was in honor of Dr. George Fletcher who became the postmaster in 1886. A few historic areas from the original towns remain to this day, including The Meadows and Rugby Grange, which are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Now the area is known for its beautiful and lush natural surroundings including creeks and waterfalls, which attract hikers, nature lovers, and photographers to the area from all over the United States.
