The Oneida tribe had long resided in the area before the first European settler arrived in the late 1700s. Local legend holds that the Oneida, “The People of the Standing Stone,” were guided to the area by a moving stone. Samuel de Champlain waged war on the Oneida in 1616 at the Battle of Nichols Pond. The Oneida's clever fortifications featured high and thick, fire-resistant walls that easily rebutted the French attack. The fortification is today remembered in the community name, Oneida Castle, one of the neighboring micro-communities that today comprise the Town of Vernon.
This string of small towns includes Brewers Corner and Sconondoa (home to the World's Smallest Chapel roadside attraction) to the north. Oneida Castle lies to the northeast. Eaton Hill and Gibson Hill lie to the south, Vernon Center is situated to the southeast, and Sherrill lies to the west. The Town of Vernon also encompasses the smaller, central Village of Vernon. The Oneida Creek hems in the city on the west, and the Sconondoa Creek flows in the east.
Visitors will discover many fascinating attractions within a 10-mile drive of Vernon. Not far away in Oneida, you can visit the Oneida Community Mansion House, a famed 19th century utopian community turned museum, as well as The Utica Rome Speedway, Turning Stone Resort Casino, and The Vernon Downs Casino and Hotel. Revolutionary War buffs will also want to drive over to Fort Stanwix National Monument to see the reconstructed fortifications. Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College also offers eclectic exhibits in the Utica area, about 7 miles from Vernon.
