The first settlers to the area called it Clarkstown until 1856, when James De Clark suggested that the town change to the name Nanuet, which was given by Chief Nannawitt of the Munsee. The chief sold lands in the area and signed the Wawayanda Patent, which was a colonial land grant in New York. Over the next 40 years, several rail lines came to the city. This led to quick growth. Today, the hamlet is home to almost 18,000 residents.
Outside of locally owned shops and boutiques, shopping consists of an outdoor mall: The Shops at Nanuet. The mall houses a few major retailers and many popular brands and stores, like Coach, Victoria's Secret, and Michael Kors. There are numerous options for eating in Nanuet, ranging from local dives to national chains. From Japanese and Mexican to casual pizza and burger joints, the town has something for every taste.
Because Nanuet blends into nearby communities, you may consider hotels in other cities. Don't worry. There are many hotel options within a short drive of the hamlet, ranging from budget spots to high-end lodging.
