The first settlers to the area called it Clarkstown until 1856, when James De Clark suggested that the town change to the name Nanuet, which was given by Chief Nannawitt of the Munsee. The chief sold lands in the area and signed the Wawayanda Patent, which was a colonial land grant in New York. Over the next 40 years, several rail lines came to the city. This led to quick growth. Today, the hamlet is home to almost 18,000 residents.

Outside of locally owned shops and boutiques, shopping consists of an outdoor mall: The Shops at Nanuet. The mall houses a few major retailers and many popular brands and stores, like Coach, Victoria's Secret, and Michael Kors. There are numerous options for eating in Nanuet, ranging from local dives to national chains. From Japanese and Mexican to casual pizza and burger joints, the town has something for every taste.

Because Nanuet blends into nearby communities, you may consider hotels in other cities. Don't worry. There are many hotel options within a short drive of the hamlet, ranging from budget spots to high-end lodging.

When to Visit Nanuet, NY

There are exciting things to do and see in the area year-round. Springtime months warm nicely, with daytime highs warming from near 50 degrees in March to low 70s in May. Low temperatures average from the low 30s in March to near 50s in May. Showers are common during spring months, so pack an umbrella if you're visiting then. Hotel rates begin a steady climb in anticipation of top tourist season.

Every year in March, check out the Annual Art Walk and Exhibition Reception, where local school kids showcase their creations for all to see. View the artwork at restaurants and shops throughout the town. In New York City, spring events include the St. Patrick's Day Parade and the Ninth Avenue International Food Festival.

Summer months in the area are peak for tourism and temperatures. Families with kids flock to the area driving hotel prices up. Average high temperatures from June through August hover in the low 80s, but humidity raises the heat index even higher. Lows are comfortable in summer near 60 degrees. Nights will still be steamy.

Every June, the hamlet hosts the Nanuet Street Fair, where over 15,000 people descend for fun, food, and live entertainment. Enjoy a cocktail in the beer and wine garden before perusing over 200 stalls featuring handmade jewelry, art, and home goods. Make memories with the kids at the old-fashioned family games, rides, and stops for delicious treats. Notable nearby events include the Belmont Stakes and the New York International Fringe Festival.

Hotel rates continue to climb throughout the fall months, but the temperatures drop to comfortable levels in the 60s and 70s. Low temperatures get chillier each month, dropping to the mid 30s by November. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade draws tens of thousands of visitors during the holiday week, so book well in advance for Thanksgiving trips.

In October, Nanuet brings fall fun to life at the Nanuet-West Nyack Rotary Fall Festival. Fill up on fall food and drinks while browsing the vendors for homemade holiday gifts. Live music and games liven up even the dreariest fall day. Other nearby events include the Haunted Halloween Carnival and New York Film Festival.

During December, expect hotel rates to be pricey and drop during January and February. Temperatures are cold with highs around 40 degrees and lows in the 20s. Winters are sometimes snowy, especially if a nor'easter comes around. Make sure to venture into the city for ice skating at Rockefeller and New Year's Eve at Times Square.
