Muscatine, Iowa, is a unique city, and in fact, no other city in the country has the same name. In its early years, the city went by different names, including Bloomington and Newburg. Muscatine began as a trading post in 1833, and before the Civil War, had a hand in helping to free slaves. One of the most prominent leaders of the community was Alexander Clark Sr., who helped overturn racist laws and helped desegregate the public school system in the state. More from this guide...

Muscatine is known as “The Pearl City” or “Pearl of the Mississippi” because of the pearl button industry founded by J.F. Boepple, in 1891. The McKee Button Company created buttons that looked like pearls, but were made from freshwater mussel shells. This company became one of the largest economic contributors to the city by the turn of the century. Another factor to the city's success was its location on a number of railroad lines. The population of Muscatine is approximately 22,887, and it continues to grow.

There are several points of interest throughout the city. The riverfront area includes Riverview Center, Riverside Park, and more. You can also check out the Mark Twain Scenic Overlook for beautiful views of the area. The Muscatine History and Industry Center teaches visitors about the history of the city. There are also two historic districts in Muscatine that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
