The history of Murfreesboro began in 1811, when the town was first founded as the county seat for Rutherford County. While it was originally named Cannonsburgh, it was renamed Murfreesboro in honor of Colonel Hardy Murfree, a Revolutionary War hero. It served as Tennessee's capital from 1818 to 1836, when the general assembly voted to return the capital to Nashville permanently. Agriculture was at the heart of the economy here for a while, but eventually the economy turned to education and bore the nickname the “Athens of Tennessee” by the end of the Civil War.

Modern-day Murfreesboro is still home to many fine academic institutions, including Middle Tennessee State University, but the town isn't all about work and school. You'll find plenty of attractions here as well, which is why the area is getting more and more visitors every year. With plenty to do throughout the year, you won't find a better time to visit the city yourself and discover everything it has to offer. You only need to find a hotel that offers the type of experience you're looking for.

When to Visit Murfreesboro, TN

While you can find plenty to do in Murfreesboro no matter what time of year you visit, your experience can differ significantly depending on the season. If you're not a fan of the heat, you may want to avoid visiting during the summer months. With highs well into the 90s in June, July, and August, the Southern heat will be in full force. The winter months can get cold, however, with January and February commonly delivering freezing temperatures for overnight lows. The spring and fall months continue to be the best if you're looking for a temperate climate.

Rain is fairly common in Murfreesboro throughout the year, but it's rarely all that severe. Most months average around a total of 3 inches of precipitation, but if you're looking to stay dry, traveling during August or October would be your best bet. Rains are the worst in early winter and mid-spring, with a daily chance of rain at about 25 percent. If you want to escape the snow, however, Murfreesboro is the ideal location, as the city receives little snow.

The busy season for travelers is the summer. Despite the hot temperatures, people seem to love this town from June through August, with more people coming through than at any other time of year. As a result, lodging prices may be a bit more costly. The second busiest season is spring. While the temperatures are cooler in the spring, rain is more common, especially in April. Fall is somewhat busy as well, but nowhere near summer and spring levels, so you can expect reduced hotel prices. Winter is the most affordable time to travel, but it's also the coldest.

Recent traveler guest reviews of Murfreesboro, TN

Below are reviews of the city of Murfreesboro, TN from an actual visitor's perspective.

"Great hotel!"
Score 4.0 / 5

The area we were in was very close to our event, also our purpose. There were many restaurants and stores all around making everything very easy without wasting time traveling around, allowing us to spend more time visiting together rather then traveling about. Also the signage was nice and "tall" making it easy to locate whatever we were looking for.

Jeannine M., from 06-Aug-2017
"Middle Tennessee State University Graduation Visit"
Score 4.0 / 5

Met with family to attend graduation at MTSU. Happy time. Ate at Samurai Japanese Steak House, it was delicious, and we also went to Chicago Pizza which was wonderful gathering for us all. We will have good memories of our visit to Murfreesboro.

Raymond B., from 10-May-2014
"Slower pace than Nashville"
Score 4.0 / 5

Plenty of shopping and dining choices. Less traffic and congestion than Nashville.

Roni L., from 05-Apr-2014
"Lots of activity, and lots of traffic."
Score 5.0 / 5

Lots of nearby restaurants and shopping. We were attending a soccer tournament in Smyrna, which was only 10-15 minutes away by interstate highway. In spite of the new roads and 4+ lane highways, we were caught in two traffic jams.

William T., from 17-Mar-2014
"Nice town."
