Formerly known as Fresno Flats, Oakhurst is a census-designated place in Madera County, California. Settlers were initially attracted to the area after gold was discovered in a nearby creek around 1850. Despite the profitable amounts of gold taken during the Gold Rush, providing supplies to the mines and lumber companies proved more profitable, and the local economy flourished. The community's first post office opened in 1873 under the name Fresno Flats, but it was moved and changed to Oakhurst in 1912.
Today, Oakhurst is a gateway to Yosemite, making it the perfect home base for visitors who are eager to explore California's natural beauty. Whatever your reasons for visiting, it's important to find the right hotel that places you near key attractions.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Oakhurst, CA?
The ideal time to visit Oakhurst is in the shoulder seasons. Late spring and early fall boast incredible weather without the tourist crowds, which can help you score money-saving rates on area hotels. Average highs in May hover around 80 degrees, which is significantly cooler than summertime highs that hit 98 degrees in July. Fall is slow to cool off: High temps sink below 80 degrees by October, creating the perfect opportunity for hitting the trails.
Despite the heat, many visitors descend on Oakhurst and surrounding areas all summer long. As a result, hotel rates skyrocket, giving into supply and demand. To enjoy the best rates, try to book your room several months in advance and consider accommodations in neighboring communities. The good thing about visiting during the summer, however, is that all seasonally closed trails and roads in Yosemite are open by May or June, giving you complete access to the park.
Bargain hunters might want to consider a trip to Oakhurst in the winter. While adventuring in Yosemite National Park is limited, you can still enjoy the area's restaurants, shopping destinations, museums, and indoor attractions.
