Austinburg is the only community in Austinburg Township. Both are named for Judge Eliphalet Austin, who laid out the community in about 1800. Austin also was a state senator from 1829 to 1831.

Austin and several others arrived in the area from Connecticut in June 1799. They built log homes, cleared land, and planted wheat. He returned to Connecticut and convinced more people to go back with him. The settlers were religious, stopping work on Sundays for sermons, prayers, and hymns. The Rev. Joseph Badger preached the first sermon in the community in 1891. A traveling missionary, he returned a few months later to organize the first Protestant Church on the Western Reserve and the second in Ohio. The congregation today is known as the First United Church of Christ of Austinburg.

After the settlers built their homes and established their church, they focused on schools. Austin set up the first sawmill in the county and was the first postmaster in the first post office. Many of the structures in the Austinburg area date back to the early 1800s.

Today, the area is known for vineyards, wineries, golf courses, and other outdoor attractions. Austinburg is about an hour east of Cleveland and 7 miles south of Lake Erie. You can find numerous parks on and near the shore.

What is the best time to visit Austinburg, Ohio?

The best times to visit the Austinburg area are in late May to late September, when average highs range from 74 to 84 degrees and lows from 54 to 64 degrees. If you're looking for the most warmth, shoot for July, when highs will be in the mid-80s and lows will stay around 64 degrees. Hotel rates will be at their highest during these times, so book early or search dates for lower rates. Visitors to vineyards, wineries, and golf courses focus on the summer months.

Temperatures drop pretty quickly outside the warm season. You'll see a difference of about 30 degrees in average highs between early March and late May and between early September and early December. If you're traveling in early spring or the fall, you could score lower room rates. The cold season, from December to March, is not popular among travelers but would have the lowest room rates. Average highs during this time range from 37 to 46 degrees, with average lows from 22 to 31 degrees.
