Berlin is the oldest village in Holmes County. It was first planned out in 1816 by John Swigert, a native of Berlin, Germany. Joseph Troyer was another early settler, but he was from Berlin, Pennsylvania. Along with Swigert, Troyer decided to name their new hometown after their old ones. Most of the first settlers in the village were German or Swiss and from a variety of churches. After immigrating to Pennsylvania, they moved further west into Ohio. The Amish arrived in Berlin in 1820 and are still flourishing here today.
