Graph of Brazil, IN Hotel Prices for Next 20 Days

Rates shown are nightly rates before taxes and do not necessarily reflect all Brazil, IN discounts available. The chart reflects the cheapest Brazil hotel for each day and each star rating category.

Brazil got its start in 1838 when Massachusetts native William Stewart settled in Clay County and built a house. Stewart, known as "Yankee Bill," was a carpenter and millwright. In 1843, Owen Thorpe donated land to make a city and platted the town, which at the time contained 28 lots. Stewart suggested Brazil, after the South American country, as an easy-to-remember name for the newly platted town.

The name gained the city a friend. The Republic of Brazil presented the city of Brazil with a replica of a fountain known as the Chafariz dos Contos, built in 1745 in the Brazilian city of Ouro Preto, as a friendship symbol. The fountain was assembled and installed in 1956 in the city's beautifully wooded Forest Park.

Brazil's early economic history centered around coal, brick, and clay. Today, manufacturing is an important part of the economy, and there are several local manufacturers, the largest of which is Great Dane Trailers.

The Brazil Downtown Historic District, the Clay County Courthouse, the Meridian-Forest Historic District, and the Clay County Hospital are among the structures in Brazil that are on the National Register of Historic Places.

When are the best times to visit Brazil, Indiana?

For comfortable temperatures, the best time to visit Brazil is between late May and late September, when highs range from the mid-70s to the mid-80s and lows are in the mid-50s to mid-60s. This time period is also the most popular among tourists, so hotel rates will be the highest for the year.

Spring and fall offer lower hotel rates, but it's a trade-off, as temperatures will be lower as well. While May and September offer days in the 70s, early spring and late fall lead to daytime temperatures in the upper 40s. The winter, which has temperatures in the 30s and 40s for highs, with lows at freezing or below, is not a very popular time to visit Brazil. If you travel during the spring, your hotel rates will be the lowest of the year.

What are the best things to do in Brazil, Indiana?

Brazil offers numerous opportunities for outdoor activities. A nice way to commune with the outdoors is to visit Forest Park, which provides 49 acres of woodlands, a swimming pool, a bandshell, a pavilion, a playground, 13 picnic shelters, and a quarter-mile paved walking/go-kart trail. The park has hosted the Brazil Rotary Club's Fourth of July celebration for more than 80 years. The bandshell has housed the Brazil Concert Band since the 1920s and can easily accommodate 700 people. The covered pavilion seats more than 1,000 for concerts and other events.

The most notable of the historic structures in Forest Park is the Chafariz dos Contos Fountain that was given to the city by the country of Brazil. Two historic log cabins are also in the park.

If you like golfing, you'll be happy to visit here, as the Forest Park Golf Course is adjacent to the park. Pete Dye, renowned for his golf course designs and construction, designed the course.

The 97-acre Craig Park has about 3 miles of walking trails, fishing lakes, picnic areas, green space, and sports fields. The park hosts a fishing fun day every September. Babe Wheeler Park is a 1.4-acre neighborhood park with picnic shelters, a playground, sports facilities, and open space for activities. Small organizations sometimes meet in this centrally located park, which is an excellent spot to relax for the afternoon.

Visit the Clay County Historical Society in Brazil to learn more about the city and county's history. The historic museum, which is open from mid-March to mid-September, was constructed between May 1911 and February 1913 as a post office. The Historical Society began in 1925 during the Clay County Centennial, displaying artifacts in downtown store windows. The organization moved into a room in the Clay County Courthouse until 1974, when Brazil got a new post office, and the Historical Society purchased the historic post office building. The museum was dedicated in July 1980.

The museum is part of the Brazil Downtown Historic District, which includes structures from between 1875 and 1935, such as the 1910 Citizens Bank Building. The district has notable examples of architecture, including Renaissance Revival, Romanesque Revival, and Italianate styles.

Another historic building in Brazil is the Clay County Courthouse, which was constructed in 1914 in the Classic Revival style. The impressive three-story building has a tiered parapet with a clock face, as well as a two-story dome on the flat room. Inside, you'll find a stained-glass dome.
