Take a day trip to see the Doubling Point Lighthouse in Arrowsic, less than 30 minutes away. The lighthouse was one of four built in 1898 on Arrowsic Island. The area is remote and peaceful, and perfect for taking pictures of the lighthouse and the Kennebec River. In 1988, Doubling Point Light was listed on the National Register of Historic Places along with the other three lighthouses built the same year — Perkins Island Light, Range Lights, and Squirrel Point Light. All are still active as aids to navigation.
At Reid State Park, stroll the long expanse of the beach areas. They offer beautiful views, are quiet, and are not overly crowded. Picnic tables and grills are available, and pets are allowed during the off season. There are tide pools, rocky outcrops, and bike and walking paths.
If you want to swing into action, the Brunswick Golf Club is the place to do it. Established in 1898, the club is a golf tradition. Take time to explore the imposing wooded trails of the 1,000-acre Brunswick Town Commons. The area was donated in 1719 to the town. During WWII, the area was appropriated by the government and designated as the Brunswick Naval Air Station. In 2006, the land was returned to the citizens of Brunswick, upon which it was restored and redesigned as a recreational center for the people.
