Exploring Hurley, WI: A Historic Gem with a Rich Mining Legacy and Outdoor Culture

Hurley proudly preserves its past, with several landmarks that offer an insight into its rich heritage. One such treasure is the Old Iron County Courthouse, now transformed into the Iron County Historical Museum. This architectural gem, designed by L.H. Ruggles in the Richardsonian-Romanesque style, was completed in 1893 with the expertise of contractors Rinkle and Carroll for $27,303. The original clock, added to the tower by J.J. Neuhavre, a Chicago jeweler, still stands as a testament to the era's craftsmanship. Recognized for its architectural significance in a region with few comparable structures, it has been on the National Register for Historic Places since 1977. Today, visitors can explore three floors of exhibits within the museum, including a weaving room where volunteers continue the traditional craft of making rag rugs on looms. Another significant historical site is the Iron Exchange Bank of Hurley, which is the oldest bank of the Gogebic Range. Established on November 26, 1885, by influential individuals like Dr. J.C. Reynolds and his brother W.S. Reynolds, along with other prominent figures in the mining industry, the building stood as a cornerstone of the community's economic development. The story of Hurley's past is also told through its newspapers. The Montreal River Miner, Hurley's first newspaper, debuted on October 8, 1885. It eventually merged with the Iron County News in 1950 to become the Iron County Miner, which continues to be published weekly. Adding to the cultural diversity, La Nostra Terra, an Italian language newspaper, circulated from 1904 to 1913 before joining the Iron County News. These historic locations and stories are not just remnants of the past; they are active threads in the fabric of Hurley, offering visitors a unique and insightful journey through time.

"Beautiful Park"
Score 4.0 / 5

Copper Falls State Park was beautiful! The 1.7 mile trail is a little demanding, but very well maintained. Don't try using a stroller though. That's next to impossible!
