The rich history of Lawrenceville dates back to 1697. The town was initially established under the name "Maidenhead" and became an incorporated township in 1798. During the American Revolutionary War, American troops marched through Maidenhead and engaged British troops in the Battle of Princeton just outside the township, where the Princeton Battlefield State Park is now located.

Reverend Isaac Brown, who served as a full-time pastor at the Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville and founded the Academy of Maidenhead, led the petition to change the town's name because the word "Maidenhead" had acquired the alternate meaning of "virginity." The New Jersey Legislature officially changed the town's name to Lawrence in 1816. The new name came from Captain James Lawrence, a hero in the War of 1812. Soon, the town was renamed Lawrenceville.

Many of the buildings and structures constructed during the earliest years of Lawrenceville have survived, making the town a great destination for historical and cultural exploration.
