Marshall got its start in 1872 when it was officially platted, but the area had been used as campgrounds for the Dakota tribe long before that. After much debate, the new community was named in honor of Governor William R. Marshall, the fifth state governor. By 1873, Marshall had its first newspaper and nearly 80 permanent buildings. Thanks to its fast-growing population, Marshall incorporated as a village in 1876 and a city in 1901.
Today, Marshall is home to Southwest Minnesota State University as well as the Schwan Food Company headquarters. In fact, one of the city's downtown streets is named Marvin Schwan Memorial Drive after the founder of the largest frozen-food delivery company in the country. Thanks to its world-class amenities, sports events, shopping destinations, and outdoor activities, Marshall has become a fun place to live, work, and visit.
