Before that, the Wisconsin River split the community into two cities: Centralia on the west and Grand Rapids on the east. These two halves merged in 1900, adopting the name Grand Rapids for the entire settlement. However, the name posed a challenge as goods and mail destined for this city often got misdirected due to another Grand Rapids in the same county and the more famous Grand Rapids, Michigan. To resolve this confusion, the community changed its name in 1920 to Wisconsin Rapids, which stands today and continues to represent the unity of the two sides.
