While you enjoy Chilliwack's wilderness areas, it's easy to imagine what life might have been like for the Stó:lō people who lived in the region around 10,000 years ago. When European settlers made contact with these native people, they had a strong population of around 40,000. The pursuit of gold brought Europeans to Chilliwack in the late 1850s. After the gold rush, farms were established to take advantage of Chilliwack's fertile soil.

The Township of Chilliwack became British Columbia's third municipality when it was incorporated in 1873. Centreville, a large subdivision, was established in 1881. However, in 1887, its name was changed to Chilliwack. The City of Chilliwack was incorporated in 1908. It took until 1984 for the city and township to merge, forming the District of Chilliwack. In 1999, this became the City of Chilliwack.

When to Visit Chilliwack, BC

As with other cities in British Columbia, Chilliwack enjoys relatively mild weather, by Canadian standards, all year round as it's warmed by currents from the Pacific Ocean. It rarely drops below zero; in chilly January, the average is 1.6 degrees Celsius. In July, it's much warmer with average temps of 18 degrees. This is Chilliwack's peak season and a great time to enjoy the city's outdoor activities. However, those mild temperatures bring the crowds that drive accommodation and flight prices sky high.

Locals and regular visitors agree Chilliwack is best enjoyed in September. The summer tourists have left, but there's still some warmth left in the air. The leaves are turning fiery shades of red, orange, and gold, and the grizzly bears are out and about. Remember to charge your cell phone before you head out, so you can take advantage of all the photo opportunities that cross your path. Spring is also beautiful, but it often rains, which can spoil the plans of visitors who plan to spend most of their time in Chilliwack outdoors.
