Stavanger, the fourth largest city in Norway, is a city of influence. Although it developed only in the later part of the 20th century, it is now recognized as the center of the Stavanger metropolitan area, Norway's Petroleum Capital, and is home to the NATO Joint Warfare Center. Stavanger now is very much an urban city but for visitors looking to experience the city's history, visiting certain attractions and city landmarks will effectively accomplish that. These include the Stavanger domkirke which is Norway's oldest cathedral still standing today and Gamle Stavanger or Old Stavanger where wooden houses can still be seen. For a photo-op, don't miss The Three Swords monument right outside the center of Stavanger. The Stavanger Oil Museum, Canning Museum, and Rogaland Kunstmuseum are some of the notable museums in the city worth visiting. When the climate is right, Stavanger has areas where hiking and climbing can be greatly enjoyed, soaking up some sun and swimming can be best be experienced at the Solastranden, and ice skating on Stokkavannet. Don't miss out on the city's nightlife which is pretty much concentrated around the bay, a stone's throw away from the city.
