The area now known as Hermiston was originally inhabited by the indigenous Umatilla, Walla Walla, Cayuse, and Columbia inhabitants. The earliest European settlers established a Catholic mission in the area in 1847. By 1862, the territorial government established Umatilla County. The town of Hermiston was officially incorporated on July 10, 1907.
With its location at the crossroads of several interstate highways, Hermiston has quickly become a hub for the entire Pacific Northwest, which makes the setting an attractive option for distribution centers, logistics companies, data centers, and other employers. The city has the largest 30-mile-radius workforce in Eastern Oregon, which has contributed to its population growth in recent years. Aside from a bustling economy, Hermiston features a variety of landscaped parks, walking trails, protected wetlands, grassy areas, and other points of interest for outdoor enthusiasts.
