Princeton was established in 1837. It is the governmental seat of Mercer County in southern West Virginia. The site was settled in 1826, named for the American Revolutionary War general Hugh Mercer, who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Princeton. In 1865, the county seat was moved to Athens, a town that is five miles away, until Princeton forcefully retook its place as the county seat in 1869.
When is the Best Time to Visit Princeton, WV?
The best time to visit Princeton is between May and October when the city has clear weather and warm temperatures. Princeton is an ideal jumping-off point to other places such as Harper's Ferry, but the city itself is known for its historical museums. However, since spring to summer and early fall are the best times to visit the city, these are also the hardest times to get good deals on hotel rooms. Rates may be higher during these months, and hotel reservations tend to fill quickly so it's a good idea to make reservations early if you want to visit. Another way you can get a good deal on a hotel room is to plan your visit to Princeton before the peak tourist seasons in spring through autumn. After the summer, tourist business tends to drop, and so do hotel rates. Finding hotel bargains is easier and less expensive when you can plan your trip in advance and find deals near area attractions.
